A Segment of Approximately 22,400 Miles Over Approximately 18.26 Days, installed for the Abstract Visions show at Cerritos College that opens on August 25th. The 3D printed form encapsulates one instance of my daily commute from N. Pasadena to Valencia from June 6, 2011 with an accompanying field recording from within the vehicle and custom LED fixture. The final ABS 3D print was created using GPS XML data that was mapped in Processing and printed on Airwolf’s new AXIOM 3D printers. The field recording is played back via surface transducers embedded in the concrete and wood parallelepiped pedestal nicknamed Monolith. The LED fixture uses WS2812 RGB LED strips aka Neopixels driven off of an Adafruit Trinket Pro.
Special thanks to Airwolf 3D and Cerritos College’s Engineering Design and Production Technology department for providing 3D print time and materials to produce the piece. Electronic Countermeasures for spare LED strips, various electronics components, and time to build the piece. James MacDevitt for curating the show, helping with the install and working with Miodrag Micic to make the piece a reality. Michael J. Day for helping build and design the bones for the pedestal and the fixture housing. Butch Allen for the loaner 3D printer that allowed me to do early LED light tests. Last but not least Kerstin Hovland for letting me incessantly bombard her with thoughts and her invaluable feedback throughout the process.
I have a backlog of images from the rest of the build of the piece that will get posted at some point, but for now enjoy this still of the final piece.
