Yeah, I’ve been thinking about giving a cigarette at a time a sequel where mc and Ciggy die of old age and seeing how Red lives with his grief (but mostly what happens before they die).
Which I understand is unnecessary given that the fic had a proper ending and all but… it’s something that’s doomed to happen.

A question. What if in A cigarette at a time, when MC took that blood test, it turned out that she had cancer instead of a baby? O.o I've been thinking about this possibility ever since the baby thing started!

…. That’s exactly what was going to happen originally but I had to change it because it would have been way too sad (I was even having nightmares about it). Basically she was both going to be pregnant and have cancer, but she wouldn’t tell Red until the baby matter was sorted, but since he left… she never told him. Long story short, she was going to DIE not long after Red returned… I’m glad I decided to change it, a terrible ending if you ask me.
(If I ever get to write the fic I always talk about where I would write all the alternate stories I think about this will be in it)
But answering your original question, if the blood test results showed she had cancer and no baby was involved, MC would have avoided telling Red for as long as she could hide it, but he would find out eventually of course. He would have stayed to support her in any case, since the reason he left is because he thought she cheated.
