Quality > Quantity : Thoughts on the New SHS Curriculum
It’s been over a decade since the K-12 program started. The whole point of adding two years was to help us catch up with international standards, I guess. It was supposed to make sure we were actually ready for college or jobs, instead of just rushing through everything. But as time went on, everyone kinda realized that just adding extra years doesn't automatically mean we learn better. Everything moves so fast now, and what we learn in school actually needs to keep up with real life. This is why the curriculum is changing again, proving that education has to grow alongside us.
In response to these changes, the new Senior High School curriculum is finally clearing out the clutter. For a long time, students struggled with too many subjects, sometimes juggling like 15 classes at once. The updated program fixes this by dropping the list to just five or six core subjects. This shift matters because it gives learners time to actually get the lessons instead of just memorizing stuff. It moves the focus away from just finishing requirements and towards building real skills. It’s basically choosing quality over quantity. This way, schools can finally make some room where real learning actually happens.
In the end, these changes show that our education system is ready to grow. It is no longer just about adding two years to catch up with other countries, but about making those years truly useful. For those of us graduating under the old system, we leave knowing that education is trying to adapt. Now, the challenge is passed to the next batch of students who will actually live through this fresh start
