Athena, the goddess naming a city for the ages that was and the time to come Pallas Athena is the classic greek goddess of strategy, wisdom and handicraft. Her parallell in roman religion was Minerva, in the norse religion the goddess Frigg. These names lives on thousands of year later, Athen, the capital of Greece is named for her (and Frigg has given name to Friday, first day of the weekend in most germanic languages including English). She is probably originated as the warrior and wisdom goddess Anat or Ishtar in the caananite religions mentioned in Tanakh. They again originated in Egypt, as the godess Neith. In hinduism, the godess for wisdom Saraswati and the goddess for war Durga are equivalents. Athena has her most important shrine Parthenon at the sacred hill Acropolis in Athens, but this statue is in front of the rebuild Academy of Athens. This classic place of wisdom, learning and science was in operation for nearly a thousand years, combining knowledge and wisdom from older civilisations in Africa and Asia with newer discoveries and philosophies. Symbollic, it became the birthplace of European civilisations and some of its culture. In European art and culture Athena symbolizes freedom and democracy. This statue is based on the work Athena Promochos of the classic artist Phidias, but made/ commissioned by Leonidas Drosis in the 1870s. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athena #citysymbol #statue #academyofathens #2017 #Athena #Promochos #classic #architecture #goddess #Ionian #Phidias #Leonidas #Drosis (ved Academy of Athens) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPvdxO3p-RK/?utm_medium=tumblr
