Anne wasn’t sure she could breathe. She certainly could not speak. Not after such a gentle touch, not after the way that his hand had slid over her skin, and certainly not after the way that his lips had brushed against her jaw. How could she even respond to such a touch? She could not remember ever having such gentleness displayed for her, used to, instead, the rough and cursed touches of her husband.
And now he was apologizing. She knew why, of course. Athos had become her confidant, her companion, her comfort, even if all it was for was to join her in the garden for her daily walks. He was a constant in her life now, and she trusted him… she was his Queen, and he was her Musketer. It was wrong beyond all belief…
She was still frozen in place, unable to even look up into his eyes, when she felt the first drops of rain begin to fall. The clouds seemed to erupt suddenly, rain pouring down over them, but she still could not move. Moving would mean returning to the palace, leaving his touch, leaving him behind, and she wanted to somehow vocalize the way that she felt, that no apology was needed, and in fact, his… desire… was returned.
Words no longer had meaning, though, as she looked up at him and into his eyes. How could words adequately describe the way that she felt, the way that she longed, for him and only him?
Her lips pressed to his before she could think about it, and she moved her hand up and around his neck, just barely sliding under his collar so that her fingers could touch bare skin, and the curls at the back of his head. It was abrupt and messy, but they were hidden by the rain, hidden from anyone that turned back to look. No one would notice she was missing for a few moments longer, and she spent them kissing him, letting him know that no apology was necessary. Not when she longed for him as well.
