What does the 'add image alt text'(something like this when you click on the three dots) whenever you post a picture mean
Does it work as an ID or not?
hello! alt text is another version of image description. When using a screenreader, the person uses their finger to scroll through and a voice will read out the words on the appliance to them. with images, screenreaders usually just say “image” and not what is in it, hence the need for image descriptions. Alt text, however, is a built in way for screenreaders to read out images. on instagram, for example, there is built in alt text to a certain extent where a screenreader will read out “tree, outside, dog” as the computer/phone recognizes what these are.
inputting your own alt text on images with sites like tumblr, instagram, and twitter allows for the person uploading the image to control this and make the image easier to understand. for example, the uploader could change the alt text from “tree, outside, dog” to “an image of a yellow lab outside underneath a tree”.
Essentially, alt text functions in the same way that image descriptions do, but they are more readily available to the screen reader user. Alt text places the image description within the image itself whereas the traditional image descriptions come After the image and, in some cases, even come multiple reblogs down so that the screen reader user is getting the post out of order!
tl;dr yep! alt text is another way to ID an image! just less visible to users as it builds the ID into the image itself :)
