Building a Shotgun Purse Part 2
Part 1
And here's where we break out the paper mache!
Paper mache is not a quick process if you want to be sure no mold grows. This leaves with most people with two options. Either you have to wait several hours/overnight to let each layer dry completely or you put your project in an oven for roughly 40min.
I was oh so fortunate in that living in a dry heat 99f + house with no ac meant I only had to wait about 2hrs for each layer to air dry completely. This means I could bang out 2 to 3 layers a night.
Do be aware that paper mache paste can start to develop a funky sour smell if you use a large batch over a series of days
Step 4 The Paper Mache Stock and Body
Most people know the basics of paper mache but for those out of practice or unknowing we are talking about nothing more than paper, water, and flour.
The paper here was newsprint and some of those free auto magazines you get outside grocery stores. It's easier to tell you've done a complete layer if you alternate plain print for one layer then bright ads for the next. Do not use glossy print)
Word of advice if you're doing the strip method I used here I have to quote Yoda "Do or do not, there is no try." i.e. when tearing the strips just go for it don't worry about them being the exact same width or straight. The slower you go the more uneven the results will be.
For the paste I used the 'Raw flour and Water' recipe from Ultimate Paper Mache. My paste came out pretty consistently looking like pancake batter wich made it sticky but not too wet allowing for faster drying. While most also add salt to retard the possibility of mold, I did not.
Bonus was when I found knife rack that served as a stand for both application of the strips and and drying.
STEP 5 Removing the Frame
Bearing in mind that I didn't have a hacksaw around I made my paper mache about 9 layers thick before letting it dry overnight, Once I was certain it was 100% dry and solid I cut the whole project very carefully with a basic bread knife.
The cut was made where the hinge will be and then the frame was yanked out. Be careful doing this or you may end up with well scraped knuckles and having to make extra cuts to fit your hand in and remove the frame.

Building a Shotgun Purse Part 1
Unlike my wing building this one I fully intend to document from start to finish.
This is for my next costume for The Devil's Carnival :Allelujah
During the Q&A after The Devil's Carnival someone asked about episode two and Terrence Zdunich made a joke/commented "Angels with shotguns."
Being the only person to show up as a heavenly angel I took that as gospel and I'm running with it.
GOAL: A Purse that looks like a sawed off shotgun
Ideally this will not only hold the essentials but also fire confetti 'rounds'
Step 1 Sketching out the gun
I knew this purse was going to meet certain needs
1. Big enough to hold the essentials
(For the record most clutch purses are bullshit and hold nothing!)
Phone
Wallet
Camera
Keys
2. Not be mistaken for an actual weapon for obvious reasons
I went with the sawed off look for convenience and potability though I kept the full stock to give more storage space, and because research showed it's sometimes kept because recoil can still be a bitch.
Step 2 Building a mold
Ducktape and cheap soda boxes are a girl's best friend
I know a lot of times purses are made of just pressed cardboard/cardstock wrapped in cloth but this baby was gonna need to be more solid to meet my demands and have the right feel, so I decided to go with paper mache and for that to work I needed a basic frame. This is made of nothing more than a soda box, ducktape, and the rolls from both paper towels and TP
Step 3 How the purse will open
Originally I had intended for the purse to open lengthwise (yellow line) but once it was suggested this thing should fire I looked back at the drawing board and realized this was a really stupid idea.It was just begging to have everything fall out.
So I scrapped my first round of mache and started round 2 with the design altered to match a real shotgun (purple line). This allows the roomy stock to remain the primary storage and gives me access to the barrels for loading purposes.
