Kuroko: Is there something unexpected about you that always surprises people?, Kise: Talk about someone that you admire., Furihata: When was one time you conquered your fear?
Furihata is answered here
Kise: Talk about someone that you admire.
There are so many people whom I admire, but since she is on tumblr, it feels appropriate to talk about my friend @courtingstars (Kat) here.
First off, I admire her writing more than anyone else’s. She and I have a certain similarity in our styles. We like long, flowing phrases, and the integration of poignant imagery within a classic linear narrative. I read her works and I think to myself: this is what I want to be able to achieve one day. I am blown away by lines such as:
“His feet dragged across the pavement, his worn tennis shoes trailing through alternating spaces of shadow and light. Overhead, the neighborhood streetlamps buzzed and crackled.”
“He meant it, even though his heart was pounding. Akashi studied him. His red eyes looked strangely mournful. Distant, a little downcast. They seemed so different from the eyes he had before the finals.Everything about Akashi seemed different now. Different, yet familiar.”
or (and slight spoilers from one of the most beautiful works I have ever read)
“You’re irreplaceable,” he moaned. “All of you. You are irreplaceable to me.”
The words were shaky, feeble. Kuroko barely understood them. Yet he felt their importance. As if they had been wedged deep within Akashi’s soul for years—and he had clung to them, until they were battered and worn.
One in particular blazed inside Kuroko’s heart. It scorched him like a brand.
That was it, he realized. The light in the darkness.
The only truth that mattered.
I want my writing to have that same clear and crisp description, beautiful imagery, and power of emotion.
Furthermore, Kat doesn’t just have a sense of how to write beautifully – she understands characters and captures them in amazing ways. She puts thought into every line she writes, referencing specific scenes and trying together the best elements of canon. She also always researches before writing, which always impresses me! (I hate research and it is sometimes one of my weaknesses in writing.) It ends up turning into scenes that make me brim over with emotion. (And now I’m rereading sections of Bridges. Goodness I adore that fic.)
But, the thing that I truly admire about Kat is that there’s a lot more to her than just her amazing and inspiring writing. She’s also an amazing person. For every compliment I send her way, she throws one back. We talk online most nights, and she even changed what time she came online because I had to change my schedule when I began working! Not to mention the fact that she always dedicates fics to my friends and I. And I’ve never seen anyone take such genuine and supportive interest in the lives of people they barely know as she cared about my stories about my friends before she had ever talked to my friends! She’s one of the kindest people I know.
Now I have a terrible temptation to gloat about all my other amazing friends from online and IRL here. I feel like they all deserve a post like this! But, alas, we would be here for years. But Kat is one of my few friends who is older than me, so she is my senpai. I look up to her in a certain way and immediately thought of her to answer this question.
(and, since I’m sure you’ll be reading this – I love you, Nijimura-san <33333)
