Due to contortions you probably don’t care much about, I have ended up with two chromebooks.

I have to say, first of all, that I really really like them:  inexpensive, largely interchangable, linux laptops.  But I should also note that I run them in developer mode with crouton (https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton) chroots on them -- and a lot of what I like is having access to a reasonable linux laptop at these prices.  Without crouton, I probably wouldn’t like them as much.

The first is an 11″ Samsung chromebook 2 with an ARM processor, 4GB of memory, and 16 GB internal storage.  The second is an 11″ Acer C720 with a Core i3 processor, 4GB of memory, and 32 GB internal storage.

The samsung is kind of hilariously pretentious, with a faux-leather texture on the back of the lid.  By my gut feeling, the ARM in it feels about half the speed of the i3 in the Acer.

The Acer is undoubtedly the more capable machine:  faster, more storage, and the intel video card in it appears to handle a much wider set of external hardware more gracefully -- it’s not that the Samsung can’t drive an external monitor or anything.  But it seems to prefer driving it at 1080p, as opposed to whatever it is actually capable of.  This is probably some stupidity by Samsung, as the Mali video processor is supposed to handle much higher resolutions.

Regardless -- the point is that by all accounts, I should like the Acer better.

But I really don’t.

There are three things about the Acer that almost entirely kill it for me:

It has a fan, and is therefore not silent.

The SD card slot leaves the SD card hanging out an inch on the side of the machine -- which means you can’t leave an SD card in it all the time -- you have to take the time to either shut down and remove it, or eject and remove it.  Or risk it getting completely obliterated in your bag, or because you bumped into a door.  These are things I do.  :/

It has one of the worst keyboards I’ve ever used, hands down.

By contrast, I love the keyboard on the Samsung.  I like it more than many full-sized dedicated keyboards I’ve used.  It doesn’t take an SD card, but a Micro-SD card, which is fully inside and has a little door over it.  That helps make up for the 16GB internal ‘hard drive’ (eMMC) that it has.

In order, the things I would improve on the Samsung:

32 GB storage

Fix the video out resolution weirdness

Faster processor

 But none of them are show-stoppers for me.  They’re just irritants, whereas the Acer has a number of just awful things about it.

The Acer works much better as a “workstation replacement” than the Samsung, hooked up to a monitor and with a different keyboard plugged in.  Lots of third-party Linux software is available compiled for Intel processors and not ARM (the Chrome browser, for instance, or the Dart language IDE (both distributed by Google)), which again makes the Acer a better all-around development workstation.  These things mean I absolutely use it.

But I don’t like it.
