Oh no, here she goes. Over analyzing Ninjago

From the very beginning, jays entire character motivation has revolved around Nya (for the most part) (there are other examples but I’m just generalizing here)

Literally from the very first pilot episode he was obsessed with her

But the thing with this is that while he was head over heels for Nya since before time had a name, he also had other traits, he loved his parents (literally where’d they go? Justice for Ed and Edna ✊), ANDDD he was an inventor

But because we have a whole crap-ton of chacacters who have this engineer archetype (Zane, pix, Nya, Sora), Jay is supposedly “no longer needed” to make vehicles

In the wise words of Tommy boy “Well, we already have people who build the team vehicles, so Jay doesn't need to do tech stuff anymore”

BUT HERES THE THING!

Jay has never been the one to create the teams cars and jets and motorcycles and whatever else, even before everyone else came along that’s what Nya did. Jay, on the other hand, was never an engineer, Jay is an inventor, (a tinkerer, if you will). What no one seems to realize is that Jay was never getting in the way of the new characters being tech people.

Jay creates ideas, not high-powered motorcycles with cannons in top. They’re effectively trying to solve a problem that doesn’t exist. And the only reason they had to do it to Jay instead of any of the other original tech people is because they have no other ideas for what a robot could possibly be good for and if they did it to Nya that would get crazy criticism (and for good reason) cause like ain’t no way you’re going take away their shared love only girl on the team’s passions,

And the thing is: this actually is actively making Jaya worse as well. Because Jay has been boiled down to “lover boy”, which he always has been, to an extent, but before there was reasoning behind it. They bonded because they’re both blue collar men from unusual circumstances. the thing is that by taking away their shared love for machines and giving it to PixZane, Jaya now has to rely solely on Jays obsession with Nya, meanwhile Nya gets to keep her passions. And now that it’s no longer unique, the whole trope of two engineers working together goes to Pixal and Zane for the sole reason that they’re both robots (and what other personality trait could a robot have right? 🙄). (Which is really sad for them that that’s their only personality traits at this point but that’s a different discussion in its own)

But now Nya still has her engineer traits ( which includes her process of thinking in general that kind of reflects that), but Jay just has “nyanyanyavideogsmesnyanyavideogamesuwu” on constant loop in his mind.

The good news is the show has actually started fixing this, to an extent. For example, Jay’s crazy plan to infiltrate the administration with the birthday cake then with distracting the guard by talking about that dance thing. The thing is though is that it isn’t enough. They did that to show that bits of Jay were coming back, but then in the last episode of s4 Jay is like “Nya you should go take down the imperium wall cause you’re the best engineer ever! UwU” and it just kind of un-did all of the “bringing Jay’s personality back” cause like they both should’ve gone.

I just feel like Jay didn’t keep that creative thinking that he had always been known for after that administration idea.

That’s my main point, no one else really has the same creative mind as Jay. All of the other tech people are builders, so there’s really no reason why Jay can’t have his creative tinkering back, especially because is strips him of every personality trait except for the whole “obsessed with Nya” thing (which seems like a newer issue but honestly it’s been like that since forever the difference is it slowly became Jay’s only personality trait)

(Also I would just like to point out that the only reason Nya’s personality doesn’t completely evolve around Jay like his does for Nya now is because it would be messed up to do to the only girl in the team, but they can get away with doing that to Jay because he’s male. Otherwise they’d probably do it to both of them.)

TLDR: The writers mistakenly treated inventor and engineer as the same role. Jay was never an engineer, he was a creative inventor tinkerer dude, so the writers have effectively hollowed-out his character traits to make room for “other engineers” (and ruined the foundation that Jaya was built on in the first place) even though Jay was never the one who was in the way, but the issue is that they can’t take these traits out of Nya or Zane and Pixal because that would be messed up to do to Nya (obviously) and there is no other possible thing that they would have a robot’s personality be ig. And because of that, Jay has no other remaining traits other than “lover boy”
