Big Leaf Season goal unlocked: embroidered a life-size bigleaf maple. This one is based on a leaf I collected in Forest Park, Portland, in August 2023 while I was playing hooky from the ESA annual meeting after getting back from Concatenate Fest and just wasn't ready to conference yet. 100% hand-stitched, no gods no masters no sewing machines.

Bigleaf maples, Acer macrophyllum, often drop leaves in the fall with these little dark patches on them. These are speckled tar spot fungus, Rhytisma punctatum. Speckled tar spot fungus keeps the chloroplasts in the areas it infects alive even after the leaves fall, so they keep producing glucose to feed the fungus. It’s a little like a zombie fungus, but for plants!

Other Seattle locals tell me these gorgeous trees starting to bloom near my mom and dad’s house are big leaf maples, aka Acer macrophyllum, aka Oregon maples.  And the flower clusters can be eaten raw when full of nectar.

California does not possess the large areas of hardwood forests that cover much of the eastern United States. Displays of fall colors are localized and limited for the most part to understory shrubs and trees. There are, of course, the glorious aspens as well as several species of maples. Bigleaf maple is simply glorious when the sun backlights the leaves. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
