At my field placement, we often conduct trauma assessments on youth referred for Problematic Sexual Behavior. All of the boys in the group have some type of trauma, and most were sexually abused when they were younger. Hurt people hurt people. Separate the behavior from the person, and you'll be able to have so much empathy and compassion for the offenders you may work with. I love working with victims, and I NEVER thought working with offenders is something I would do, but WOW, what a passion I have for it. #trauma #acescore #socialwork #thethoughtbubble Wilson, H. Childhood trauma isn’t something you just get over as you grow up. Pediatrician Nadine Burke Harris explains that the repeated stress of abuse, neglect and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues has real, tangible effects on the development of the brain. This unfolds across a lifetime, to the point where those who’ve experienced high levels of trauma are at triple the risk for heart disease and lung cancer. An impassioned plea for pediatric medicine to confront the prevention and treatment of trauma, head-on.
What is your A.C.E. score? Adverse childhood experiences are one of the greatest public health threats unbeknownst to the majority of the population. Childhood trauma directly impacts long term health outcomes and increased awareness is what is required to collectively come up with solutions in healing this type of trauma.
As parents, we are confronted with our traumas every time we come to a difficult impasse with our child. We have in that moment an opportunity to reenact our not so pleasant past, or to engage in a new, more positive approach. Parenting is not easy, but it is a wonderful rite of passage into true and radical healing if we choose to face what is in front of us with courage.
