Comfort Food

Summary: Ace surprises Nancy by cooking her a meal.

Nancy was sitting at her kitchen table with papers strewn everywhere and she’d consumed what seemed like her tenth cup of coffee that day. Her hands were shaking and she wasn’t sure if it was the fear talking or the inordinate amounts of caffein. Her neck hurt from the strain of pouring over this papers. She was looking through a dozen ship manifests, but nothing seemed to match the one that Odette would have been on. She looked up and saw Ace standing there with a bag of groceries in his hands.

“How’d you get in?”she asked with suspicion.

He held up a key and said, “Carson gave me one.”

“You two are really becoming buddies, huh?”

Ace simply shrugged and headed for the counter. He set down the bags and started taking out things item by item. Nancy’s eyes followed him and stood there watching him. He was very meticulous. “You didn’t have to buy me food,”Nancy replied.

“I promised Carson that you’d eat and you’ve been guzzling coffee like it’s gatorade for the past few days.”

She didn’t say anything but sat there, her eyes focused on him. He was certainly a mystery. She attempted to go back to her papers, but the scent of spices in the air were distracting him.

She walked over to him and looked over his shoulder to see what he was doing. “What are you making?”

“Just a little stirfry. Nothing special.”

He loved when she peered over his shoulder, her closeness was comforting to him. He washed and dried the chicken before dipping it in breadcrumbs and placing it on a pan. He felt an arm wrap around his waste and the gentle feel of her lips on his cheek. “Thank you,”she said before heading back to the table.

A little while later, he carried a plate and a glass of water over to her. Nancy moved some of the papers to the side so he could set it down.

“Aren’t you going to eat.”

“Already ate. There are left overs in the fridge. I’ve got go. I promised I’d help my mom with something.

Ace squeezed her hand before walking away and Nancy simply smiled to herself.
