When they became too old or too disabled to be productive members of the tribe, Aché women were violently murdered by another man in their tribe. Unproductive elderly Aché men were exiled from the group. One of the four groups of Aché is reported to have practiced cannibalism occasionally, possibly as late as the 1960s, and the northern group sometimes euthanized and cremated elderly people thought to harbor dangerous vengeful spirits (possibly advanced dementia, or Alzheimer's).
