Blown Away: Australian Greens Hail Victory For Science
Renewable energy groups hailed the decision by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profit Commission (ACNC) to deregister the Waubra Foundation’s charitable status.
According to the groups, the decision proves that Waubra has been “pulling the wool over people’s eyes.”
The ACNC revoked the Waubra Foundation’s status as a charity and advised the Foundation of the revocation of its status.
Charitable status had been giving Waubra Foundation the right to receive tax deductible donations.
Waubra Foundation had been campaigning on the health effects of wind farms.
The Foundation is still classified as a charity in the areas of advancing health and advancing public debate, neither of which allow tax-deductible donations.
Legislation prevented the ACNC from discussing the details leading to its decision.
The foundation stated that it would challenge this decision.
Greens senator Richard di Natale said, “The Waubra foundation should never have been granted status as health promotion charity, and the fact that it has now lost that status is a victory for science and a victory for public health.”
The Greens had issued a complaint against Waubra Foundation.
“I’m glad that we will no longer be lending legitimacy to an organisation that may be harming people in an effort to undermine an important source of clean and renewable energy,” di Natale added.
Andrew Bray, national coordinator of the Australian Wind Alliance (AWA), welcomed the decision, claiming that the decision had proved that Waubra had “done nothing to improve people’s health.”
“The foundation has deliberately sought to make people fearful of wind farms with scare campaigns and disinformation,” Bray added.
“It’s time for the foundation to admit their mistakes and shut up shop.”
“The Waubra foundation is a bunch of mostly landed gentry people whose houses have been threatened by turbines,” said Simon Chapman, Professor of public health at Sydney University.
“They’re spreading alarming information that upsets people.”
According to Chapman, numerous reviews indicated no correlation between wind farms and health impacts.
The foundation is named after Waubra, a town in Victoria State, which has 128 wind turbines in the area. Many inhabitants have asked the foundation to remove the town’s name from its title.
