Holland Vosijk they could NEVER make me hate you
I think that both Kell and Rhy are dying early. like. they both have good 20 years in them before they kick the bucket (so like at 45-50ish max).
this is primarily due to the fact that rhy is siphoning off of kells life force. he’s sharing a soul and lifespan with kell. because they share physical pain and emotional pain, it is not reaching to assume that the amount of years Kell was supposed to live (typical human lifespan of a male is 80yrs old, but this might vary as Kell is not human but Antari) was cut in half to share the remaining years of his life with his brother.
basically what I’m tryna say is that this dark magic was forbidden for a reason, because if it entailed essentially no consequences as we see right now with Kell and Rhy (the consequence of sharing pain and emotions isn’t that much of a drawback that would prevent monarchs or other magicians from using this spell—because I can totally imagine a king keeping this spell around for his own use), then it wouldn’t be as hidden and secret as it is. also it makes sense. if two people are using the same life, shouldn’t that life be split between the two of them? if Kell were to live up to 80, but because now he’s sharing this life with Rhy, this life is split 40/40?

A Conjuring of Light by VE Schwab
Finally, am I right? I LOVED A Darker Shade of Magic, okay. LOVED it. I love Lila, and Kell, and Holland. Loved Schwab's writing in Vicious, and The Archive, and This Savage Song. I put off reading book two because of who I am as a person, but put off reading this because. Well. I didn't enjoy A Gathering of Shadows all that much. Enough so that I donated my spare copies of the series and only kept these with the fanart inside. I am, admittedly, at the time of writing this, nearly 75% into the book, so I definitely do have Opinions, but I'm hoping the last quarter can surprise me in some way. Show me why the entire series had such an influence on the reading community for so long. Especially since most people don't even MENTION Holland, which is a CRIME.

the last episode of stranger things season five really reminded me of the shades of magic books; the stone, the calling, the worlds? yeah.
