‘ I know others see you as an easy target, but they fail to see your genius. What you’re capable of. They’re just jealous that they didn’t have the intelligence you have at your age. Their comments mean nothing. You are you, and they can’t take that away. ‘
‘ They don’t deserve you as a buddy, much less a friend. Just ignore them. Eventually they’ll give up. ‘
‘ I’m here for you. Whenever you need me. ‘
The voice played like a broken record in his mind, though a positive one at that. What was the kid’s name? Oakley, that’s right. Why did they abandon one another? No, that wasn’t right. They drifted apart, busy lives will do that to a pair of friends if one isn’t careful.
Ivo lifted the goggles from his face, setting the blow torch down on his workstation, as he observed the melded metal. Glossy red covered metal was welded to a piece of gray, finishing up the piece of work before him. A bot capable of being an assistant, an aide, a companion - something he desperately longed for. He turned the creation around to access a panel on the very back, before popping open a panel and inserting a small disc inside. The cover snapped shut when he removed his hand, and the system within began to boot up, various noises being omitted from the bot before him.
There was a distinct ding as the processing chip fully loaded, and the bot came to life, opening up from the sphere shape to reveal that it was nothing more than some metal piping and ball joints, all arranged to give a crude appearance of being ‘humanoid’. The robot had no legs, but simply remained upright by hovering above the ground ever so slightly, as its round base would have simply refused to keep it upright. Its eyes flickered to life, glowing a light blue in color, the glow from its open mouth matching it perfectly.
Silence hung in the air, as neither the robot or Ivo spoke, simply regarding each other. It was the robot that spoke first, and its choice of words took Ivo by complete surprise. After all, most of his other creations that had some sense of self, would introduce themselves directly to him. Not… this.
‘ Sir, might I recommend some sleep? You look as though you’ve not slept a wink in the last week. ‘
No mention of a name. No mention of serving him, No mention of only being there at his beck and call. Just absolute concern for him. Something he hadn’t heard since he left behind his college days, and his… best friend.
And there was a smile. Small, but present.
Not far from the pair lay a bunch of other parts, scattered about the remainder of the work table. Splashes of yellow mingled with the gray and black. Some pieces were similar to the pieces used for the bot before Ivo at the current time, but the main parts were much different. They were angled, cube-esque in appearance, with built in holds and places to attach ball joints and other fixings.
Another bot in the works, perhaps?
