Can you see me? A young Mediterranean cone-headed grasshopper (Acrida ungarica) hidden among the dry grasses of the maquis in Southern Italy. The camouflage is amazing and I only saw it cause it jumped while I was passing. #grasshopper #insect #acrida #mimicry #camouflage #mediterranean #italy #picoftheday @ilcp_photographers https://www.instagram.com/p/CDyUd8-ARtC/?igshid=148a413aa3lmo

Here's a still shot of that Common Stick Grasshopper (Acrida acuminata - Order Orthoptera, Family Acrididae) on the driveway where we first spotted him. These insects have elongated rear legs, perfect for jumping. They are herbivorous and, believe it or not, an individual can often eat more than cattle or antelope (up to 130kg of grass per year). #zimbabwe #Insect #Orthoptera #Acrididae #Acrida #Grasshopper #Africanbugs (at Victoria Falls)
A Common Stick Grasshopper (Acrida acuminata - Order Orthoptera, Family Acrididae) found in the garden of our house. It's not a great video, but note the flash of redish purple when it jumps. Like most insects, grasshoppers do have wings, they're just not very good at flying and use them instead to extend their already impressive jumps. #zimbabwe #insect #Africanbugs #Acrididae #grasshopper #Acrida #Orthoptera (at Victoria Falls)
