The Difference Between Mobile Internet and Broadband Connections: A Complete Breakdown
In the last few years, the prices of mobile-based internet have come down rapidly. What’s more, speeds and services have evolved as well — most users now expect 4G speeds, even as 3G slowly becomes redundant.
Does this mean that users are now moving from fixed-line broadband to mobile internet? Not really. Research shows that many internet users continue to have fixed-line broadband for their homes and offices, even as they use their mobile internet (whether that’s 4G or 3G) when they’re on the move. In this article, let’s look at some of the big differences between these two kinds of internet services to figure out which one is more appropriate for you.
Mobile internet (3G and 4G)
The 3G/4G internet works by connecting to a mobile network using a SIM card, allowing you to access the internet via a smartphone when you’re on the move.
The per Mbps cost of mobile internet tends to be lower as it’s usually a pay-as-you-go model.
Mobile internet relies on a mobile network and tends to be far more patchy and unreliable on a day-to-day basis. It may even work well in some parts of the home or office, and not in others.
3G/4G internet is the right choice when your internet use is limited — both in terms of time and the content you consume. For instance, if you primarily need to check emails, browse the web, text people, and be on social media, then 4G might suffice.
Mobile network rides on your mobile phone network, thereby giving you access to the internet even when you’re moving around. As long as your mobile network is present, you should have access to the internet.
Depending on the coverage area, mobile internet (even 4G) usually gives you speeds of up to 100 Mbps. This is usually significantly lesser.
Mobile internet packages are cheap but they often have data limitations. What’s more, when you exceed your data limit, the costs from thereon can get quite high.
Broadband internet
Broadband internet is fixed-line internet that’s delivered to your home or office via radio or fibre through the network provider’s cables.
The per Mbps cost of broadband internet tends to be higher than 3G/4G.
Broadband delivers faster speed and more consistent user experience. Plus, there are some ISPs (Internet Service Providers) that use fibre optic cables which makes both speed and internet quality much better.
If you need to use the internet for more heavy-duty purposes, then fixed-line broadband internet is a better idea. This includes things like listening to music, watching videos, and playing games online.
Fixed wireless broadband is tied to one physical point per subscriber and does not support roaming.
When it comes to fibre optic cable, internet speeds of 1 Gbps or even more are possible. On the whole, fixed-line broadband tends to be much faster than mobile internet.
There are a number of unlimited data plans that you can avail of when you use broadband internet.
In today’s day and age where the internet has become nothing short of a lifeline, chances are that you will need to have both mobile internet as well as fixed-line broadband. While the former gives you the flexibility to access the internet on the move, the latter gives you the speed and stability that you really make the most out of everything the internet has to offer.
ACT Fibernet Revises Its Broadband Plans by Increasing FUP limit
Over the past few months, ACT Fibernet has upgraded its broadband plans by increasing the FUP limit on the plans.
So what is FUP exactly? FUP, or Fair Usage Policy, refers to the practice of an ISP (Internet Service Provider) capping the bandwidth for each user so that a few heavy users don’t fill up the entire bandwidth, thereby hampering the internet experience for the majority. This FUP applies to unlimited plans, and it allows all customers to experience the network in the same way. Under FUP, the data download limit is usually kept on the higher side so that most customers do not reach this limit. Once the customer does reach the data transfer limit, the speed is reduced as per the plan. However, the customer has access to unlimited data download, albeit at a reduced speed. At the start of the next monthly billing cycle, the higher speed and data transfer limit is automatically restored to the customer as per the terms of the plan.
ACT Fibernet has upgraded its FUP for broadband plans across the cities where it is present. Let’s take Bengaluru as an example. The minimum broadband plan that ACT has in the city is priced at Rs. 685 (excluding taxes). After the upgrade, the plan offers 40 Mbps speed and 200 GB FUP per month. Earlier, the plan was providing a speed of 15 Mbps and 100 GB FUP limit per month. Similarly, the next plan, priced at Rs. 959, has also been upgraded and users will now get speeds of up to 75 Mbps and 350 GB of FUP every month. The company has also decided to offer an additional 1500 GB of data with both these plans.
Of course, the FUP upgrade is not just limited to the low-cost plans. The plan priced at Rs. 1059 now comes with 100 Mbps speed and 450 GB of FUP each month. The ACT Storm plan, priced at Rs. 1159, is offering 150 Mbps speed with 650 GB of FUP.
There are also more high-end plans. The one priced at Rs. 1999 gets the user 250 Mbps speed along with 1000 GB of FUP per month. The three plans above Rs. 2000 provide a FUP limit of 1.5 TB, 2 TB and 3 TB respectively, while the highest plan priced at Rs. 5999 provides a FUP limit of 3.5 TB per month.
Similarly, ACT Fibernet has also upgraded the FUP limit for its Chennai plans. The ACT Basic plan of Rs. 799 has a FUP limit of 200 GB, up from 120 GB. Not only that, but the speed has also been increased from 30 Mbps to 50 Mbps. Similarly, the ACT Storm plan, priced at Rs. 1099, has increased its speed from 175 to 200 Mbps, even as the FUP limit stays constant at 1250 GB. Other higher-priced plans have also seen a similar upgrade in speed.
What’s more, ACT has also recently launched Gaming packs. These are targeted at gamers and come with enhanced flexibility including options like on-demand speed boost, and on-demand data boost, allowing gamers to enjoy an uninterrupted high-resolution experience.
As users start shifting their internet use towards high-bandwidth applications like videos and games, ACT Fibernet is adapting to the change. The higher FUP across its different plans will allow users to experience uninterrupted, high-speed internet throughout the month.
