I picked up this Action Captain figure, produced by Sungold back the mid-'80s, as a lark for Christmas. This is what a discount/knock-off toy used to look like, so compare it to the joyless dreck that you see in Dollar Stores today. I never went much for military-themed toys as a kid -- my eye went for Sword & Sorcery and Fantasy combat -- but this clunky, top-heavy look was very much the standard back then, and because he wasn't an established character or property, you could create your own story for him or mix him in with other toy lines. Action Captain was produced to jump on the wave of Tough-Guy Action Movies of the day, so the various sculpts were meant to resemble the hypertrophic male leads from "Rambo," "Delta Force," and "Commando" et al. I'd say that the facial sculpt here was probably based on Chuck Norris, but I can't help seeing Rio Blast from "Masters of The Universe," and what really sold me on him is the resemblance to the drive-in actor William Smith.
