Backtrack: Vindictus Original Review: Episode 25
Skyforge (Beta)
I tend to play a lot of F2P MMOs due to budget constraints, preferring the action oriented ones over the WoW clones, and Skyforge is a decent action MMO... but it’s not perfect.
What Skyforge does right, it does very, very well. The combat is solid, the each class handles in a fairly unique way, being able to switch classes on the fly (while not new) is a good choice and visually the game is stunning even on Medium settings... but much of that is just the surface polish. It’s when you get a bit deeper that some flaws start to show.
First, content. Skyforge limits the majority of it’s early gameplay to instanced ‘dungeon’ runs. I’ve clocked 10+ hours into the game thus far and I’ve only unlocked 1 overworld-styled area aside from the main hub (which has no combat/enemies), the rest are instances. So anyone looking for they type of gameplay you’d get in say, TERA or GW2 where you spend most of your time on a massive overworld map with every other player on your server/shard, you won’t find that here. And that’s a bit disappointing if you ask me. Yes, it breaks up the traditional MMO grind... just not as well as I think the developers had planned, because players still grind the open-map quests.
Second, the classes. I said that Skyforge lets you switch on the fly (why? Because you only have one character and can’t create alts), and it does... between the 3 base classes you get at the start. What that means is that while you can switch between the “magic” Cryomancer (which for some reason is the Attack class instead of the Sword/Board Paladin, which is classed as Defense) and the other two (Paladin and the healer/support class), doing so early in the game is a mistake. Why? Because in order to unlock the ability to unlock new classes you first have to reach a pre-set point on the progression grid of one of the 3 base classes, and if you’re constantly switching between classes, then reaching that point will take far longer than it should, because to upgrade a class you spend tokens corresponding to the next progression levels color (Blue, Green or Red), and once you spend these tokens, they’re used up. Meaning that if you’re switching between Cryo and Paladin, then you’re using tokens to level both, and each class levels individually. This all means that early game, switching classes is only advisable if that was the only way to playtest each class... except that there’s a training hall that lets you preview any of the classes in the game for free.
Finally, combat. In a game like TERA or GW2, you can attack and use skills freely, even if there’s nothing around you. Not so in Skyforge. To use even your basic attack you must be targeting an enemy. This sounds good in theory, but enemies move (and so do you, if you’re not stupid) and your targeting is limited to a cone in front of you, meaning enemies can, and will, move out of being targeted. Why is this bad? Well, it’s not so much “bad” as annoying, because it means that you’ll often be focusing on one target instead of the entire area. There is a sort of “lock-on” feature, but given that enemies are often mods and every boss I’ve run into thus far has summoned minions at some point in the fight, it doesn’t make much sense to me to use it. A lot of skills have AoE, but it’s limited, and all real AoE skills are location based (meaning you cast them on a location, not really the enemy). Also, some skills can miss. Yup, you can call down a giant iceberg on a bosses head... and he can sidestep it cleanly.
Now after all that you might think I don’t like Skyforge... and you’d be wrong. Yes, there are flaws. No game is perfect, after all. And while I’d like to see Skyforge offer more open-world exploration and not focus so much on instanced areas, I can kind of forgive that. Why? Because the game is fun, looks great and, surprisingly, has a very fair F2P model in place. Hell, even exchanging in-game credits for the real money currency is fast, easy and remarkably cheap. But all that being said, Skyforge doesn’t do anything unique as far as MMOs go. It’s not generic, WoW-clone fair, but it’s not breaking any new ground, either.
In all Skyforge is worth a look if you like action MMOs, but it’s not doing anything truly unique, which is a shame since doing so could have set it apart from the current MMO scene and given it some kind of edge against other action MMOs like GW2 or TERA. But as it stands, Skyforge is just a heavily instanced action MMO with a few interesting concepts that, while nice, could be done better.
