Her mother had just been murdered, and without André, the other Virunga NP rangers, and veterinarians from Gorilla Doctors she would have died within days, if not hours. Ten years later, to her, André is both mother and father, and when one of the other mountain gorillas at Senkwekwe - there are three other orphans being cared for here - wants his attention, she can get a bit jealous. Although she now weighs over 70kgs, she loves being close to him, and climbs onto his back for a piggyback ride every chance she gets. “I’m getting too old for this,” an exhausted and sweaty André told me after half an hour of rough play with Ndakasi and Ndeze (who also wanted her share of André’s attention), his shirt torn. “But I will always be here.
