Bright warm lights are in my eyes, only allowing me to pull my attention towards the brunette middle aged women, who I get to call my mentor and favorite gaslighter. There’s this strange comfort of being on stage, completely vulnerable, even when you are somebody else. It makes me feel safe, Mrs. Taylors can judge and scrutinize me all she wants. At the end of the day, it's a character to her, not related to me in any way. I like that. It gives me an outlet to express my faults.
While Mrs. Taylors is still writing down notes from the last duo, I turn to see that his eyes are already on me. Meeting his eyes, I whispered, “A trick that I do before every audition and show is to breathe in for 4 seconds, hold it for 4 seconds, breathe out another 4. I do it 4 times. It might help.”
Flashing me a Cheshire cat smile, “Thank you. This is my first time doing anything like this. I am in way over my head,” chuckling at the end.
He has an accent, I thought, how is he going to audition for the role of an American dad if he, from my guesses, is british. Shaking that thought, I asked smiling, “How about we do it together while she finishes up those notes?”.
He nods while holding eye contact with me the entire time. Before I could get lost inside those eyes, I started counting the seconds with my fingers, feeling more nervous than I usually do.
Right as we finished, Mrs. Taylors said, “Slate and begin when you’re ready.”
Taking my last deep breath, I looking into Mrs. Taylors eyes before projecting nice and clear, “I am Emery Jade and I will be auditioning for Jodie, the mom.”
Still maintaining eye contact, I hear my partner next to me say, “Hello, my name is Harry Styles and I will be auditioning for the role of Jim, the Dad.”
His name, a name for someone who will make it one day. A name that I’ll never be able to escape, just like those eyes. Whether I come out of this his friend or his enemy, I will never be able to forget him.
