Listen up.⁣ Let’s talk about something that has bothered me for a very long time.⁣ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣ The scenario goes like this:⁣ White actors go out for a role and later find out that a person of color ended up booking that role and then openly use the phrases “I didn’t get the part because they went black” or “I didn’t get the part because they went diverse”⁣ That is such an easy way out, and a potentially dangerous way out. Not only is it likely incorrect— we send a bunch of different options to our teams and they choose what serves the story best based on a variety of different factors—but it also perpetuates racism. It suggests that those actors of color earned the role not based on merit or skill, but rather because of the color of their skin. The truth is that although you have no idea why you didn’t get the job, you choose to blame it on the color of someone else’s skin. YOU CHOOSE TO BLAME IT ON THE COLOR OF SOMEONE ELSE’S SKIN.⁣ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣ You have zero proof that someone else’s race is the reason you didn’t get the role.⁣ YOU CHOOSE THAT REASON. BECAUSE IT’S EASY.
