In reference to the influenza induced meningitis case. I'm fairly sure you've already encountered this, but one of the reasons why healthy individuals are sometimes hit strongly by influenza (or other diseases) is an effect known as a cytokine storm. The immune system somehow locks cytokine production into a positive feedback loop, which can understandably be dangerous in patients with a healthy immune system. if I remember correctly this is a component of the 1918 pandemic. Also SARS.
Yes! This is one of the reasons why I question people who are constantly harping on how they want to "increase" their immune system (I mean, in addition to the obvious auto-immune problems). A cytokine storm is the immune system increased like crazy, and it's BAD.
One of the other diseases where cytokine storm-type findings were found was smallpox, especially in "black pox" - hemorrhagic smallpox, where the skin turned black from the blood coagulating under it. Black pox was fatal 98% of the time. The smell the patients gave off was known as the "foetor of smallpox", and was apparently something that's nearly impossible to describe...it wasn't the smell of a pustulous wound, or of decay, but a more acrid, biting, strong "sick" smell, that has been noted in other cytokine storm victims.
Thanks for noting that; I knew about it in a general context but had never considered it for that meningitis patient.
