ok this post by @anticupid16 got me thinking abt non-onlychild detective and im making my own post to spin off with the Very Funny AU idea that just occurred to me (at least its funny to me)
i have a few different OCs who come with a bunch of Family. dnd characters, yanno, sometimes you come back and go hey remember betty here's her idiot son. but the most insane one to import with the Full Coterie of Siblings would be Ada
that means Rook and Rebecca Grey, before he died, had twelve daughters
the fun thing is. I've had Ada's dad turn up in tangled up in blue. but he wouldn't be Rook. Everard really is Rebecca. they're the exact same sort of Distant Neglect in the wake of grief- he just left Ada in the Agency's hands to raise, while he travelled the world trying to find a way back to his wife.
now i don't know that Ada would be The Protagonist this time, because the way the ages are laid out that would make her oldest sister uhhh. in her 40s ghfhgf. which is doable. and not all her in-between siblings have names. the last time i wrote out a full list of them, it was with ada as 13 and the eldest as 32, so i'm going to do this with Ada as reference point, with (age/age) for if ada is 25 or 13 (AND IF I GET IT WRONG ITS BC IM BAD AT MATH RN LEAB ME ALON)
numbered for uhhh. birth batch? lmao.
Hepzibah. Oldest, 19 years older than Ada(45/32). Odd and a little off-kilter from the world. Lacks empathy, doesn't really have much of an internal moral guide. But Rook taught her the 'rules' she needs to follow to be acceptable, and she liked having a clear guideline that gets people to stop being inexplicably mad at her. After his death, Gremory took on something of that role- albeit more at a distance, given Hepzibah had moved away for study and Gremory was looking after their younger siblings. Got into law, and is very successful, either about to or already made partner at a well established firm. Lives in the city. Is friendly with Rebecca like they're just. Unrelated adults. Probably sometimes forgets she's her mother.
Knows about the supernatural and has figured out about Rebecca's relationship with the Agency aaages ago. Has not told anyone purely because she doesn't care and they never asked. Rebecca is going to have a heart attack one day when someone the Agency is dealing with calls their lawyer and her eldest turns up, chill as anything dfhghdfg
Gremory. 17 years older than Ada(42/30). Ambitious, sharp and gorgeous. Got into university early, and was away when Rook died. Came back home immediately and handled everything funeral arrangements, at the same time as continuing her study online, and basically raising the two sets of twins and Ada herself. The others did help, but she just Took Command. Gremory stopped viewing Rebecca as their mother about one year after Rook's death, when she still wouldn't even try to be around for Ada. Ada feels guilty that she thinks of Gremory as her mother more than Rebecca. She accidentally called her Mum in front of Rebecca and Rebecca just vanished for like three months.
Lives in the family home like it's a declaration of war on Rebecca. She probably has been doing stocks+investment with the family funds, and is very successful with it. Absolutely everyone from Svartr on has had college fully paid upfront thanks to Gremory. Once Ada isn't needing her around as much, she'd probably... idk. Start a company? Manage charities? She's very Woman King in a 'fought tooth and nail to claim the land, first to bear the crown' sorta way. She craves something that's highpowered, puts her on top, lets her accrue a lot of money (she likes money), lets her directly help people.
Could make her the Detective- she wouldn't generally become a cop but if that was the only job that could work with raising Ada then she'd do it until Ada is ready to go to college. Which would make for an interesting variation of the Detective going thru the series with a child they care for. Adam or Ava romance. Deduction/Combat. The King to their Knight. Give her ten years and she'll be on Rebecca's seat in the Chamber.
Booker. 15 years older than Ada(40/28). Angry, argumentative, a rage in her that never quite seems to quench. A baker! She works with Haley- Haley handles the customer facing sides of things, while Booker is producing the bulk of the bakery's food. Craves finding someone she could settle down with, but battles with having such an unapproachable 'fuck off' aura. In her 40s is probably a bit more settled- sadder tho if she hasn't found someone, because she's starting to give up on the dream of love.
I'd love to pair her with one of UB- maybe Nate... sorry N i keep giving you Aggro Ladies lmfao. But you'd have blueberry muffins every day for the rest of your life together....
Triplets, not yet named. 14 years older than Ada (37/25). They fully embrace the whole identical triplets thing, very insular, being all each other's best friends, dressing the same and finding it amusing to fool others. All extremely gay. They got really into fibre arts, starting with spinning- more or less because they were mythology nerds as kids and decided to be The Fates lmao. Probably moved out of Wayhaven for a time, then came back home, all living in the same house. They run a successful yarn spinning and dyeing business, do craft markets up and down the coast. Absolute hits at renfaires, though outside of Costume Time their style is very modern and chic.
Svartr. 11 years older than Ada (35/24). Stoic, intelligent, steel at her core, but feels like she's missing something. Few realise how out of place she feels- Rook most certainly knew. After his death, she changed, became even harder to read. She hides it with ease now, with a sly smirk. She'd have moved out of Wayhaven when she was about 17. Absolute gun nut. Works in a gun store, collects antique firearms, goes hunting, regularly supplies her sisters with what she hunts. Everyone has as much venison, pork and rabbit as they need. Gremory and Hepzibah argue over who gets the best pelts.
Could be a Detective candidate, though if so I'd almost certainly do another AU-step away from canon, and make her a private investigator who's also been tracking some disappearances. She's piecing together the rise of a serial killer- which leads her after Janet Greenland into Wayhaven, concerned she's next on the chopping block...
Deduction/People/Combat. Unsure what romance hmm... someone of f!UB, at the v least.
Twins, Harper and Lynn. 8 years older than Ada (32/21)Born conjoined (Rebecca needed a c-section for them, unsure about the others), surgically separated, and their legs were unable to be saved. Harper is married to one of the fishermen who still work in Wayhaven, and is pregnant with the first grandchild of the family. Have a coolly-distant relationship with Rebecca.
Harper knows about the supernatural because her husband is a klabautermann- he told her before they got married, fully ready to let her go if she wasn't comfortable staying. She didn't even think about leaving him and she's so fiercely protective of him so she takes the secret-keeping Deathly serious. Hepzibah knows she knows, having seen Harper Distracting people from noticing a veil malfunction at Christmas, but- again. If you don't ask Hepzibah, she will never tell you anything lmao.
Lynn is in the city either studying medicine (another Early To Graduation+uni) or graduated and working. Lynn's thinking of moving back to Wayhaven, though- she's hoping Dr Turner is interested in her potentially taking over his practice...
Final set of twins, Thea and Jeanne. 6 years older than Ada (31/19). If they're 19 they're struggling with Being Teenagers- squabbling and arguing, best of friends to worst of enemies throughout the course of a day. Struggle with Rebecca- they remember enough of her and their dad that they remember her stepping away from them and they never quite forgave her.
If they're 30, they've run away to join the circus. Not even kidding fghhfg they got started with gymnastics when they were young, but going pro athlete with that wasn't quite what they were craving, despite having the skills for it. A circus came through Wayhaven right when they were having to figure out their careers at school, and they immediately changed all their plans after seeing the acrobatic performers- and were incredibly happy with the lives they found. They probably end up helping out with the post-book2 carnival... revealing at that moment to Detective Gremory/Svartr that in the last few years they've found out about the supernatural on their own.
and then we have Ada! The final Oops baby. If she's the detective, she's 25 years old, bright and hopeful and friendly, very intelligent. Prim, natty dresser. Wants To Help People. People/Deduction, Mason romance. Mason is going to get threatened by a LOT of siblings about breaking her heart. And there will be an assassination attempt by Hepzibah, once she hears the same rumours as Roshaun. I'm not even kidding, Hepzibah would have met him, seen him with Ada, been friendly with him. Heard the rumours, done a calculation in her head- and then decide the faster she kills him, the least grief it causes Ada in the long run. She doesn't succeed, but the fallout is Fucking Awful. Rebecca has to step in because Mason nearly kills Hepzibah in turn- not for lack of trying but because Hep has picked up some Useful Tricks. And somehow some DMB?? So she nearly gets categorised as a Trapper-like threat before Rebecca Fixes it.
Even as a 13 year old, though- Ada's a clever, inquisitive little girl, with a soft, bright smile and a natural kindness. And she's an absolute weirdness magnet. Probably Also has the blood mutation, in addition to whoever is the Detective- and I think Book 1 in this AU would have some... horrifying alternative events to grapple with. After all... if Garret Hayes was caught going to a friends' house... imagine if that kid instead had just the mutation Murphy was looking for?
Typically only Tactical and Unit Agents have private rooms for downtime between missions at their respective facilities, but some others also choose to live on-site. Few have lived in the Wayhaven facility as long as Ada Grey, youngest crafted of the Gargoyle King Everard of the Grey.
Originally transferring to this region's facility to join one of the facility's Units, interpersonal issues lead to Agent Ada Grey instead pursuing work in the Agency's IT department. While the sudden change drew some concern and speculation at the time, as well as some gossip regarding the permissiveness of higher ups towards her, Agent Grey has since repeatedly proven to be a great asset to her department.
While much of her daily work is the maintenance of the in-facility office equipment, her fieldwork training has made her a uniquely useful asset for Units that require technological assistance during missions. She works most frequently with Units Alpha and Bravo.
A couple of years after her transfer, Agent Grey applied for permission to start keeping pigeons in her quarters. While ordinarily pets are not allowed in Agency living arrangements, this was given special approval. Gargoyles greatly benefit from the regular consumption of eggshell, and Ada has taken care to raise birds with a specialised diet that greatly improves their eggshells' nutritional content for her species. The other gargoyles that work at the facility seem content to make do with the shells provided by the Agency cafeteria, as none have ever responded to the notices that Ada posts, offering whole eggs or crushed eggshells to any who would like them.
She tries not to let it get to her. She keeps posting the notices.
a height chart of UB and my OCs from my scum fic series!
LtR: Nat, Morag Locke, Salt Wax, Ava, Ada Grey, Mason, Felix and Mollie Tolliver (the last not yet in the fics- he's tentatively planned for the future)
thank you @wayhavenots for the tag but tragically i 1. am far too extra and b. have a history of doing height charts for characters... (the biggest one ive done was for a rp group and was 36 characters across 3 separate sheets lmao...) and now you've given me an excuse to give myself an updated height chart for my current detectives and non-detectives! and why not toss UB in alongside
yeah if you piss ada off then like half the town will refuse to work with you cos if they dont have a personal connection with her theyll have one with one of her sisters gfhdhgdhf
ada: verda save me
nate immediately gaining friendship points with ada. ada what in the fuck do you have to be ashamed of. girl seriously.
unfortunately. adam and mason is actually almost exactly what ada WOULD expect of a team that works with her mother dfghhdfg. nate's the surprise (followed by farah)
investigate investigate..
tina doing her utmost here. i genuinely dont think ada's had a partner. a date or two, maybe, only when she was in the city. but no-one's really... caught her attention enough to pursue.
off she goes home and she barely has 10 minutes to kick her shoes off and sit on the couch before Gremory is calling to ask her how her day's been
she dances a little around admitting that Rebecca turned up- but when she does, the lack of Agitation means she picks up pretty quickly that Gremory already knows. does make her wonder who is the tendril of the grapevine that reported that detail- but it could just have well been someone at the mayor's office, rather than Gremory having an inside gossip at the precinct lmao.
and once she's done with giving Gremory an update, she decides she might as well make a couple calls to her other sisters.
the triplets [#4,5,6] are out of town (thank goodness) going to a series of renfaires across the country. Hepzibah, Svartr [#7] and Lynn [#9, Harper's twin] live in the city. Thea and Jeanne [twins, #10,11] travel for work. Ada doesn't think they need informing of anything- Hepzibah will get an update from Gremory as needed.
so Ada gives Booker and Harper a call, and she doesn't exactly tell them 'there's a serial killer' but she does ask them to be a little more cautious in general. neither are gossips, so she's not worried about them spreading panic among the community (once again THANK GOODNESS the triplets are out of town)
by the time she's done with that, and made dinner, she's very ready for bed- and back to it the next morning!
awright here we GOOOO
ada: no. no, not the bad boy. cmon we're not 13 anymore. [furiously shuffles her papers]
ohh i just realised, i shoulda sent her to the alleyway- if she got the docker pin then she'd have asked Harper [#8] if her husband could help track its owner down. i think if i wrote this as a fic, i'd have tina find the pin and still incorporate that plot. ah well!
HEEHEE u have no idea mason
cant wait for him to meet Gremory heheheheheheh
pinballs across the office floor wheee
genuinely such a funny A moment ghfhghfg uncharacteristically tries to make a joke and it is [checks notes] comparing the detective's workplace to cancer
GREAT WORK LOVE IT BUDDY KEEP FUCKIN TRYING
and now for poor garret hayes :C
oh man- okay im not sure i can justify taking mason to see kate hayes bc. from what ada has seen of him. that would be a TERRIBLE idea.
ada: deep breaths. teamwork. cooperation. for the good of the town.
its soooo funny the difference between human Ada and gargoyle Ada. gargoyle Ada has the greatest respect for Ava, an excellent professional working relationship. human Ada would like to kick Adam in the shins.
shes gonna take Nate cos he does seem like the most appropriate for this particular challenge (also theyr gon be BFFs)
and back to investigate investigate (she's pursuing the evidence angle)
ugh she's so polite to the mayor adaaaaa start kicking shins already gremory will understand
adam is so funny ghfhgf ALRIGHT PATROL TIME
she does answer bobby's call and she mostly regrets it bc Ew. creeper.
definitely no other people headed home right now >x>
ada is so fuckin smol ghfhgf i know i put on her rebecca relationship sheet that she's 5'4 but i checked my notes and nope she's 5'2 SHES TINY AMONG THEMMMMM
she feels a lil guilty that yeah she doesn't miss it that much. she just isnt a Go For A Walk sort of person really lmao but she feels bad for abandoning Tina..
And he finds himself spoiled for choice.
... let's jump back a moment.
Wasted time. That’s all this is.
The cobblestones shine beneath Adam’s feet as he stalks along through the dark streets of Wayhaven. On the face of it, patrolling is not a task he’d object to, but he is not able to patrol as best suits his abilities. None of his team can. Detective Ada Grey cannot move with anywhere near the speed of a vampire, and hers is the face that must be seen around the town to satisfy her superiors, so all of Unit Bravo must take a painfully human pace as they work as extensions of the detective. Empty streets there may be, but curtains twitch and his ears pick up the murmurs of observers, and it makes his skin prickle with annoyance.
[continued]
(tried putting it all in here but for some reason it keeps breaking the post)
and now im SLEEPI gnii continuin tomorrow same post
