ADAD Studio Gateway Assessment 2
Collaborative Statement
For our time-based collaborative project, our inspiration arose from Bruce Nauman’s artwork “Lip Sync” (1969). Lip Sync is a video that, at first glance seems to be a loop, however it is in fact Bruce Nauman repeating the words “lip sync” into the camera’s microphone. We chose the weekly course concept of ‘repetition’ and after collaborative analysis of Nauman’s work, we decided to base our project on this concept of repetition of mundane activities, in which individually, we would document these activities recording ourselves. However, we came to a conclusion that it would be impossible for each member to complete the same routine or phrase uniformly each time, just like Bruce Nauman’s attempt to repeat the phrase “lip sync”. This is evidently shown through our repetitive time-based video and audio artwork.
Through our developmental process, our group broke down the brief to divide and allocate what we needed to record and how we would record it. To begin the process of this production, we listed down mundane activities that all of us participated in, narrowing it down to six repeated routines. Individually, we set off to document these videos and separate audios of the tasks for the week. Each member had to record themselves performing routines that are repeated every day. Throughout the process, we each found it difficult trying to mimic the audio through our video. The recordings were then combined, cropped and edited using the Davinci Resolve software and exported into a 5-minute duration video. Ultimately, our project combined two forms of repetition, audio and visual, all in one video.
