i really do think paradise lost is bible fanfic by any definition that makes sense aside from being produced in the modern context of a subculture that knows what fanfic is and has certain expectations about genre and copyright.
#I'm not even a fanfic fan be serious literary business person like sure! why not? but that's not really what's important to me or what I#come to fic for#I will concede that Milton was wildly ambitious and PL is an expression of that ambition and not just him getting deep in his Satan feels#while having a lot of thoughts about the text he wanted to get out in narrative form#but he did get deep in his Satan feels while having a lot to say about a lot of stories he clearly cares deeply about#that he decided to express in story form#all of this to say every time I say I'm going to be fair to Adam and every time I am just like ugh#Adam is here
