honestly the character whose screentime was wasted the most this season was Daniel, who has been demoted in my heart. He needed more time being unmoored and devastated by the loss of identity that his book flopping + the documentary stalling out presumably inspired. I didn't need a monologue ebogo didn't even land where he tells Armand to kill himself in a funny way, I needed an explanation of how fucked up and miserable he was to explain why he was vulnerable to deciding that beheading Lestat and Louis was the move. And if he and Lestat had matching little "kill yourself" moments it would have been cute and chic and highlighted their commonalities and the places they could maybe have connected, plus the situation Armand is in where both of his crushes say they want him dead but one is more vulnerable to his wiles. By contrast, even though we got very little danlou content this season his humiliation and betrayal at the thought of Louis stalking him and never telling him lands, it fits in neatly with Louis not telling Lestat about the book or Claudia the truth of her turning, it's serious enough to merit Daniel reevaluating their relationship.

I see where you're coming from, but Claudeline is approximately 1000x nicer and more interested in what makes two people actually function as a partnership than book!devilsminion. Some of the adoration for dead and monstrous things transfers, but Claudia's gentleness, protectiveness and respect is not really echoed in Armand's behaviour towards Daniel, and Claudia decides early on she wants Madeline for a companion, while Armand resists until the last possible moment. It's a fantastic and fairly singular ship, but imo it's about the death drive, resistance/submission, the eroticism of the predator-prey relationship, the strangeness of falling in love with evil, and of course Daniel as a kind of anchor and translator for Armand. Blenders! Hunting your lover for sport can be very romantic but even Armand acknowledges that his love for Daniel is possessive and vindictive and thinks somewhat self loathingly that Daniel is right to hate him. The totally fucked power dynamics aren't gently mitigated, they're central to the whole experience. Claudeline is most like some of the later vampire relationships where an older vampire makes a companion for a younger one, thus taking the perhaps inevitable maker-fledgling friction onto their own heads and allowing the lovers to get on with being lovers (or bffs to remain bffs). Maybe Quinn and Mona? The specifics and vibes of that relationship are very different, but the basic beats that Quinn, a young vampire turned against his will, is in love with Mona, a doomed human who wants to be a vampire with him, and a third party (Lestat, in this case) facilitates the transition, leaving them free to love each other and enjoy their telepathic and relatively equal relationship.

my absolute hottest take is that Lestat leaving Louis with Armand is very similar to Marius leaving Armand with the children of darkness. It's an interesting moment in the maker-lover dynamic where the maker lets go of the fledgling and essentially goes "okay I cannot rescue you from your own choices even when those choices are made under some combination of duress and false pretences." I'm not suggesting it's a perfect one to one comparison. The power dynamics are very different and the CoD are much more active and direct in their methods of persuasion, but imo in both instances the decision to walk away sort of strikes at the heart of what it means to pursue a relationship that should be between equals when the scales are so unbalanced. you cannot both be in an actual grownup partnership and constantly play god-daddy. I think that's a big part of what sours Claudia and Lestat's relationship, too. She cannot stand the indignity of having to ask for respect instead of being strong enough to demand it from him outright. I think he does come to genuinely respect her as an adult when she shows him she can force the issue by her own means, and that in turn is a lot of what brings her some measure of peace and closure with respect to her relationship with him.

also my gf has been watching the good girl's guide to murder and it's one of the worst things I've ever seen. clumsily made, alternatively infuriating and boring, the epitome of second screen viewing. the actors seem like they might have some talent but it's being actively stifled. godawful line delivery. Quite didactic. really bad tv with no interest in being anything but really bad tv does exist.

I'm trying really hard not to let all the fighting over the finale impact my enjoyment but I really think people would have a better time with this show if they let go of

a) their hiatus headcanons about what the show should be

b) the books

that second one is a big ask and I understand that. if you're annoyed that it's not only a loose adaptation but an adaptation that frequently just does the exact opposite of what the book did or takes crucial beats from one character or relationship and gives them to another, that's entirely reasonable. Me too! I like the very different thing the show is doing, but if you do not, please, free yourself. Likewise, I have nothing but sympathy for people who are uninterested in watching the story of an abusive white man who is revealed to have suffered tremendously from a very young age and loved sincerely if not well. but I keep on seeing takes that go "well since the show isn't doing the thing I thought it would, it must be doing the opposite, or nothing at all" and I don't think that's true. It is usually just doing a third thing the writers are actually interested in. Lestat recognizing his relationship with his mother is abusive and controlling and rejecting that is not him being a wimp, it is him overcoming an obstacle that wasn't really present in the book. Lestat loving Claudia deeply and Claudia having complicated and not exclusively negative feelings about him isn't saying the way he treated her was okay, it's an exploration of a particular kind of abusive dynamic. I think it's really fair and reasonable to drop the show if you don't like what it's giving you but you're so caught up on what the show isn't doing you're not looking at what is actually going on you are for sure 100% going to have a terrible time.
