gritting my teeth as I save space for the show to do its own thing and enjoy it for what it is but whyyy is one of their guiding adaptation principles so consistently "the exact opposite of what happened in the book goes down" and why is that happening here, in relation to Lestat and Gabi who I love. At this point I feel like they're setting Gabi up as essentially an Akasha parallel so they can go Gabi/Akasha, Louis/Nicki, and maybe the Marquis/Magnus (or maybe even just Lestat/Magnus.) and demonstrate how Lestat is just trapped in the same cycle forever and ever.

OK I lied I'm back but. Armand meets Claudia, who is sometimes suffering, because of her body or her mind or both. Claudia is fully capable of understanding her condition and expressing a desire to live anyway, and she does so consistently, passionately and voraciously. She actively enjoys many aspects of her life as it is. She looks for ways to improve her situation, and finds them, despite significant obstacles that Armand personally either puts in place or had the power to mitigate and didn't. When faced with the reality of an unsupportive and malicious community, Claudia seeks out companionship and understanding elsewhere. Armand chokes her out and threatens her to stop her. At the same time he sabotages every effort she makes to seek happiness, he's already made up his mind that her efforts are futile because simply living in her body is difficult enough to make her life worthless. Killing her is a mercy in his mind, and nothing she does or says, no happiness or vivacity or love she finds can change that perspective. This is somehow better than just being a vampire who wants to keep his vampire friends around and is unwilling to blow up his spot to save his boyfriend who's not that into him and his stepdaughter who actively hates him. somehow.

season three promo has also made me actually want amc iwtv fanfic. probably not enough to actually go looking for it but I'd be so interested in fic where Gabi shows up in NOLA or fic where Lestat somehow manages to save Claudia and Madeline too, and then they all get trapped on a ship fleeing the continent together or something and there's a lot of miserable fallout and everyone behaves badly and the humans are freaking out because five vampires are a lot for the rat population and everyone is hangry.
