After earning a 1-1 draw against Real Salt Lake on May 1, the San Jose Earthquakes traveled to Houston on May 5, picking up three points in a 1-0 victory.
“[This win] is massive for the team,” said forward Adam Jahn. “We needed a win really badly. It’s a whole team effort. We dug down and got the result.”
First half chances by both teams were squandered, and the Dynamo nearly scored less than a minute into the second, but it was Jahn, scoring for the first time in nearly two years, who nailed a header in the 54th to give San Jose the go ahead goal.
Houston continued to battle, earning a penalty kick three minutes after Jahn’s goal, but great defensive play kept the Dynamo off the board, and sealed the road win for the Quakes.
“I was able to get down and get a hand on [the penalty kick],” said Quakes keeper David Bingham. “It’s good to help the guys out. Adam put us ahead with a great header and gave us all three points tonight.”
San Jose plays in its fourth road match on Friday, May 8 in Colorado. The match begins at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Univision Deportes, 1370 KZSF and 1590 KLIV.

After a drama-filled game in Portland that saw Alan Gordon receive a red card and suspension for a derogatory phrase on April 14, the San Jose Earthquakes hosted the Timbers at Buck Shaw Stadium on April 21. The teams battled to a 1-1 draw.
In a match that saw Steven Beitashour make his season debut, Portland scored first - in the 59th minute - when Diego Valeri booted a ball freed by Beitashour past a diving Jon Busch.
Prior to the goal, Chris Wondolowski got an open look at goal on a one-on-one against keeper Donovan Ricketts, but Ricketts was able to punch away Wondo’s attempt. In the 74th, Sam Garza got a one-on-one with Ricketts, but took one step too many and Ricketts made the save.
With time winding down, it became imperative for the Quakes to score given that Portland had shut them out last week. It was a matter of if this year’s Quakes team had some of the Goonies magic that pulled them through last season.
Two minutes into stoppage time, the Goonies were back. Rookie Adam Jahn rocketed a ball redirected by Wondo past a sprawled out Ricketts for the equalizer.
San Jose plays at Chivas USA on April 27 at 7:30 p.m. Comcast Sports Net is scheduled to broadcast the match. The Quakes return home May 5 to host the Montreal Impact at 1 p.m.
Aftershocks Due to the issues in Portland, the 1906 Ultras have been put on probation by San Jose’s front office. Until further notice, travel privileges have been suspended, the use of controlled smoke banned and the group’s language will be monitored.
Jahn is officially a Twitter user. Follow him5 on Twitter@PillowFeet14.
Rafael Baca made his 50th career start in the 1-1 draw against Portland. Baca has started each of the Quakes’ eight matches in 2013.

After last week’s sluggish start, the San Jose Earthquakes were looking to capitalize on some of the “Goonies” magic that carried the team into the playoffs last season. The “never say die” attitude was back in full force on March 10 as the Quakes mounted a 2-1 comeback victory over the New York Red Bulls.
To get the win, San Jose had to repeat some of the late-game heroics the team has become somewhat famous for. Seventeen minutes into the match, New York’s Eric Alexander capitalized on a misplaced header and put RBNY on the scoreboard.
There was soon a question of which Quakes team would show up: the scrappy team with fierce determination from last season or last week’s team that played well but couldn’t find the back of the net. It took 66 minutes to find out.
In the 66th minute, rookie Adam Jahn was subbed into the match. Not quite an official Goonie, Jahn started making plays. Seventeen minutes after subbing in, Jahn sparked the Quakes’ comeback. Sam Cronin crossed the ball in Jahn’s direction. The 6’3” forward hurled is body toward the oncoming ball and made contact with his right foot to put the Quakes on par with New York.
In the 89th minute, it was Jahn who forced a penalty kick for San Jose. Jahn headed the ball off Sam Garza’s corner kick right into defender Roy Miller’s raised left arm. The Quakes were awarded a PK, giving Chris Wondolowski a chance to get on the board in 2013.
Wondo set up his attempt, but on his approach, Miller rushed the box. Goalkeeper Luis Robles blocked Wondo’s shot, but because of Miller’s encroachment, the referees called for a retake. Wondo would not miss twice.
On his second try, Wondo pushed the ball to the right of Robles. Unfortunately for New York, Robles guessed Wondo would go left and was in no position to make the stop. Soon after, the final whistle blew and San Jose and picked up its first win of the season. And, just like last year, did so in dramatic fashion.
The Quakes play at Columbus on March 16 at 2:30 p.m. Comcast Sports Net will broadcast the game.
Aftershocks: The Quakes are still missing Steven Lenhart, Marvin Chavez and Alan Gordon. The trio are currently out with injuries. Forward Mike Fucito played on an injured hamstring.
Defender Victor Bernardez will miss the March 23 match against Seattle Sounders FC. Bernardez has been called to Honduras national team duty to play in a World Cup qualifying match against Mexico on March 22 and Panama on March 26.
