Alec knows about David's true parentage from the start - he asks Phoebe early on in David's life due to the fact that he resembles Alec slightly and his supposed father Hudson not even a little, and Phoebe tells him. However, Phoebe is very strict about keeping Alec out of David's life, and Alec and David only ever have one real conversation wherein Alec offers then-teenage David the opportunity to be his heir and inherit his vast and bloodsoaked fortune. Isabelle does have half siblings! Alec is fairly responsible when it comes to condom usage but, especially in his twenties, slipped up now and then or just experienced a condom failure. As a result Isabelle has at least two older half-siblings who are relevant to the story, although very likely they have more than that. David, Alec's child by Phoebe Bingham, was born two years before Isabelle; Edward, Alec's child by Lorna Webster, was born one year before Isabelle.

While ordinarily he would have, Phoebe was very insistent from the start that Alec be allowed no contact with David—not because Alec is a child molester (she doesn't know about that) but because of Alec's career as a criminal and general corruptive, cynical, evil nature. David is an idealist and Phoebe doesn't want Alec interfering with that, or to see David joining Alec's ranks and dying the way his stepfather did. David doesn't even know Alec is his father.

Alec could have gone behind her back, of course, but he decided against it both for the sake of Phoebe's stability and for the relationship. He likes having her in his life and not murderously angry.
