Here at An Englishman In San Diego, we’re big proponents of supporting home-grown comic talent where we can, whether it’s by sharing updates of UK conventions, spreading the word about signings and exhibitions, and posting about new releases from up-and-coming artists and writers which we think are worth checking out. One such project has been brought to our attention from someone who’s been on our radar for a while.
Adam Lumb is a comic book artist/writer, based in Sheffield in South Yorkshire whose previous work has always impressed the hell out of me – and now, Adam has come up with a book of his own, called THE TIDE.
The debut “explores what it is like for a female law enforcement officer to try and keep safe her wards in a witness protection scheme, but presents a new perspective by shifting a traditional thriller setting to a fantasy world of demonic monsters.” Intriguing stuff.
“I wanted to try something new and this book has been 20 years in the making,” says Lumb. “I wanted a book as pretty as the books of the 90s comics boom but with an approach to story more in line with contemporary comics storytelling.”
“I’ve tried combining new approaches to rhythm and tempo in comics with diverse influences from 90s comics publishers such as Top Cow, contemporary European comics and the works of Tennyson. Ultimately, I started with what I thought the medium of comics demanded and let that guide me.”
THE TIDE is going to be “…drawn traditionally and coloured and inked using a fusion of traditional and digital techniques to create a cinematic painterly approach”, which sounds pretty damn epic. The book is also bolstered by some strong pedigree in terms of its lettering and book design, as Jim Campbell (BOOM! Studios, Image Comics, Dark Horse Comics) will be making his not-inconsiderable contribution in those departments.
