in “understanding comics” (1993), scott mccloud explains how iconography and simplified features separates a character from a distinct identity, leaving room for interpretation and letting the reader picture themselves more strongly. this, in turn, tends to make people more interested in what the character has to say.

throughout this comic he uses a simplified persona to demonstrate his thoughts, and right in the middle, proves his own point by calling attention to the purposefully basic style. after holding your attention for 13 pages, this is what he asks you
