Moonlight Gourami - “Lost Numbers”
Felicia Douglass and Adam Moerder are busy bodies whose creativity seemingly thrives on the daily hustle that big city living has to offer. The former is a triple threat who already splits her time as a member of the NYC experimental art rock troupe Ava Luna and the synth-pop duo Gemma as well as channeling her expression through colorful mediums as a visual artist, while the latter makes a living as a recovering music journalist, probably gets more attention for his words via comically curated tweets and masterminds the experimental electronic project Fitness. Together, these two multi-faceted creative nerds have teamed up to become Moonlight Gourami, a synthetic R&B pop duo who on their debut track “Lost Numbers” for Godmode Music’s Faculty singles series press fresh air into an already crowded field of smooth new sounds within that scene.
That’s a hard thing to do considering, you know, Solange’s new album and all, but Moonlight Gourami are in their own lane here by infusing ‘90s pop production behind Douglass’ silky bait and switch flirtations, leaving you wondering, is she into you, or not? “Aww, did you think that I meant it? / Nah, I was joking when I said it,” she laughs over the lost number confusion, only to propose “You should come back if you want to." There’s evidently art to be made out of making an someone sweat from a virtual distance. As someone who was literally just dumped a day ago via a confusing, cold-hearted text out of nowhere, perhaps it's also further evidence as to why keeping technology away from courtship rituals might actually help clarify the situation. At least this one has the common courtesy to go down easy...
