#octoberhorrormoviechallenge 27: Halloween H20 Twenty Years Later This was actually the first Halloween movie I ever saw, late night on BBC One on the 9th of August 2003. (Thanks BBC Genome!) The big selling point for this one was Jamie Lee Curtis back, and she definitely doesn’t phone it in, her parts are pretty good. Thing is though, outside of a pretty good opening act which features another original Halloween veteran, a cameo from her mother Janet Leigh (with nods to Psycho), and a OK comic relief with LL Cool J, she is pretty much the only above average thing about this one. The teen victims are the blandest yet (seriously guys, even in 80s slashers they thought about something other than sex!), Michael Myers’ mask is all wrong (we see his eyes too much!) making him far less intimidating, and a Halloween film doesn’t work with a full orchestra soundtrack, it needs more of John Carpenter’s simple instrumentals. It has OK bits, far from the worst in the franchise, but it does seem that they thought Curtis’ mere presence would elevate it, and didn’t put in as much leg work in the rest of the film. Oh, and H20 is still a dumb title; I remember Mike and the 'Bots on #MST3K calling this Halloween Water.
