for me as a trans guy, trans roxy was like... ok so you write one (1) trans character, but it's ambiguous whether they're trans and we barely see how they feel abt it. it felt like a deliberate Take That to trans headcanons, "oh there IS a trans character but it's someone you'd never expect and theyre conflicted about it", which... imo it would be more subversive to just let trans men have a nice thing. conversely june felt more like a validation of trans homestuck fans, which is actually nice.

Mm… I can see how June getting a simple affirmative Yeah! from Hussie is kinda big when there’s not really a point in Homestuck where trans people are shown to simply celebrate themselves (except sprite fusions like Davepeta, which is a bit different maybe). Really, I don’t think Homestuck really tends to just let people have nice things at all… pretty much everything is tinged if not saturated with conflict.

And while it’s not as overt as Roxy, who actually came out, I’m pretty sure Egbert could also fall under your “someone you’d never expect and they’re conflicted about it” designation. Within Homestuck, June-thoughts tend to follow or come packaged with the question of whether Egbert is able/willing to accept the inheritance of Dadly masculinity, whatever that means. Like, you seem to get this messy co-mingling of ‘maybe I’m a girl’ with ‘maybe I’m not man enough’ with ‘maybe I LIKE not being man enough’ – which is my current best reading of why Vriska manifests to express their shared uneasiness with what the world expects of them, following Equius’s joyful submission in Meet the Highb100d.

I don’t think ‘June is canon’ is fan validation of the same sort as ‘all ships are canon’ – not just an endorsement of the viability of possibilities raised by fans, but practically an invitation to reassess what we think we know about the character.
