It was a very slow day at your preschool. There weren't as many kids that came in today which resulted in your teacher catching up on some much needed paperwork, leaving you and your fellow toddlers to your own devices.
It's how you landed up here. Tiny hands clasping a bunch of paper flowers you had cut out of construction paper during craft time while you waited behind two open cabinet doors of the play kitchenettes that were set up next to each other.
You were getting married and of course you had to have your magical entrance with the grand doors swinging open.
Well, as grand as they could be with the plastic cabinets only coming up to your waist.
Only a few feet away were your friends setting up their own parts to play.
Your friend Lute, with her white hair and pretty pink bows, was supposed to play the pastor. Minister? Ordained? You didn't know, you were four.
To her left was your other friend, Adam, with a black piece of construction paper taped haphazardly to his chest as he stood up tall and straight, puffing up with pride.
He was the one who had the idea in the first place so it only made sense that he would be the groom.
"Okay okay. Go." Adam told you, straightening up as much as he possibly could while you pushed the toy doors open and made your way toward the two toddlers.
As you came to a halt in front of Adam, Lute turned you toward him, huffing slightly about how you weren't doing this right before you stuck your tongue out at her and turned your attention to Adam who was staring you down.
"You look pretty." He told you and for the first time you realized what color his eyes were.
"Your eyes are yellow." You replied.
Adam grinned widely as if that was the best compliment he could receive. "Yeah they are, mommy says it's cos I'm a prince. When we get married you're going to be my princess."
You gasped, excited at the prospect of being a princess and you were going to say something else when Lute shushed you both, beginning her speech.
"Do you Adam take ____ to be your unlawfully wedded wife?" She asked, messing up the words but it didn't matter that much.
"I do." He beamed, never taking his eyes off of you.
You giggled, feeling butterflies for the first time in your short life.
"And do you take Adam to be your unlawfully wedded husband?" Lute turned to you, raising her brow.
"I do!" You exclaimed before you began to look around for the rings you had carefully made out of play-dough a few minutes prior. The other two didn't seem to care about your hard work though and rushed to the finish. Lute was already getting antsy to play something else.
"You may now kiss the bride!"
Before you could even inquire further about the usage of your craftsmanship, two chubby hands were on the sides of your face and a pair of lips were on yours.
The kiss didn't last long but it was enough to throw you into shock.
It was something you had only ever briefly seen in movies when you stuck your head around the corner late at night to spy on your mom, but feeling it was a whole other experience.
Adam pulled away with a cheeky grin, leaving you surprised and red. Unknown emotions were swirling inside your little four year old brain, ones that you wouldn't be able to name for at least another five years but as quickly as it came, it was interrupted by shouting from your teacher.
"Adam! ____! Lute! What on Earth are you three doing?"
Oh boy.
That was several year ago though. At least fifteen and you lost contact with Adam in middle school when you moved away from your hometown. Your dad had got a new job, one that was only a couple cities over and despite the promises to keep up, connection between you two faded into nothing.
The loud sound of your alarm knocked you out of your dream, one where you had been peacefully sitting in a field with nothing but a blue sky and daisy's. Oh. And maybe a floating catfish or two but that didn't matter
You groaned, blindly feeling around on your table for your phone before slamming your hand on top of it and ending the horrible alarm. Sluggish, you sat up and squinted at the cold floor of your apartment.
Moving boxes that had yet to be unpacked lined the bottom walls of your sight and you sighed heavily at the prospect of having to open even more.
It had been about a month since you'd moved back to your home town and you were procrastinating hard on unpacking the last of your boxes. There were only a few left but the idea of opening them at all made you want to rip your hair out.
Your second alarm, the one you had set to prevent you from being late went off and tore you from your thoughts of unpacking. Picking it up you read the label which read: GET YOUR ASS UP YOU GOTTA GO TO THE DMV
That too sounded like a chore and you tossed your phone onto the bed before you got up and prepared yourself for the day. Putting on your make up and slapping on a clean pair of clothes were easy and so was hauling ass down to the DMV but getting through those crazy lines was another story.
As you pushed open the glass doors of the government building you were greeted with immediate questions.
"What are you here for?" A lady asked quickly, leaning against some type of machine with a screen that had a bunch of different categories on it.
You shifted your papers nervously in your hands before you replied.
"Changing my address on my license? I just moved and-"
She didn't let you finish, tapping the screen a few times before the machine spat out a receipt she shoved into your hands
"Take a seat," She huffed, "Next."
You stood there a moment, a bit stunned of how hasty the interaction had been before you gathered yourself and made your way into the giant waiting room. The entire building had to have been a waiting room, and for a good reason. The air was warm from the morning sunlight streaming in from the multiple large windows that lined the walls.
There were tons of people sitting down in the outdated chairs, and the place had opened only a few hours before.
So much for a quick visit.
You looked around the room to spot an empty seat. Preferably, one that didn't have someone already sitting next to it or sun directly in your face but luck didn't seem to be on your side.
Taking a seat between two people, you set your things down between your feet.
You scanned the slip of paper you had been given. It had a number on it alongside a letter and told you you would be helped when it was announced on the intercom and on one of the numerous tv's around the room.
"Why the fuck do I gotta wait this long?" The person next to you huffed, drawing your attention away from the paper in your hands.
You gave them a sideways glance only to do a double take at who was sitting next to you.
It was a man, a large man who was probably the coolest looking person you'd ever seen in your life. From his side profile you could tell he was handsome. His fluffy brown hair and black rimmed eyes that complemented his olive skin perfectly.
His biceps bulged from being crossed over his chest, resting on his stomach that stuck out and strained beneath his band shirt of some kind. His skin was riddled with tattoos, some of which you recognized to be a few bands you'd listened to before.
On top of his shirt he wore a sleeveless black vest that looked like it had seen better days but that only added onto this guys bad boy aesthetic.
Your mouth suddenly felt dry as you took him in, but you quickly tore your gaze away, shaking your head slightly and focusing back on the paper in your hands.
You expected that to be it out of him, but he continued talking anyway.
"They tell you to get to this shit ass place early but the line is already so long before it even opens you'd have better luck taking two dicks up your ass with zero prep then getting in at a decent time."
Your eyes widened at his crude and brash language, a surprised snort leaving your lips before you could stop it.
The man perked up beside you at that, turning his head to face you as you faced him.
God. He was even hotter facing you head on.
You blinked with wide eyes as you took in his dashing appearance.
His eyes were a golden hazel framed by two thick black brows, a golden eyebrow piercing in his left one that complemented the cheeky smirk on his face that looked as if it belonged there. From this angle, you could make out the soul patch on his chin and the scruff on his cheeks that was obvious he hadn't shaved off in a few days.
"Hey there. Ya come here often?" He wagged his brows, "I hope not, you'd be wasting your life away." The man leaned back, nearly bumping into the person beside him who sent him a quick glare before returning to their phone. You found yourself laughing again, a rosy hue developing on your cheeks.
You shook your head slightly, a smile tugging at your lips. "Haha, no. Thank God. I would rather die." You snickered, already entranced with this foul-mouthed man.
He opened his mouth to reply, no doubt something else flirty about to come out of his mouth, when it snapped shut and instead he squinted at you.
Hard.
You shifted in your seat nervously, not knowing how to deal with this abrupt change in his demeanor.
"Um, do I have something on my face?" You questioned timidly, leaning back slightly as he leaned closer, inspecting you.
"You look familiar." He commented, his lips pursed in a pout as he stared. You perked up at that and nodded.
"Well, I used to live around here. I moved away when I was eleven, maybe we went to school together?" You offered up, although you weren't sure, this guy seemed to be a bit older then you. Based off the streak of gray that was prominent in his left sideburn.
As if that were the final pieces he needed, his face lit up in recognition.
"Well shit, is that you ____?" He beamed, his smirk changing to a wide grin.
You smiled although who he was wasn't fitting any of the descriptions of anyone you knew back when you were younger.
"The one and only."
He jabbed a thumb into his chest, his smile contorting to a proud smirk once more.
"Betcha don't recognize me, babe. 'S okay, I know, I'm fucking smoking."
Yeah, you definitely didn't know anyone as cocky as him but god if he didn't have you feeling like a little schoolgirl.
"I'm Adam. Adam Firstemn."
Your jaw dropped and you could've sworn it hit the floor at this newfound revelation.
Gone was the skinny wimpy kid with a bratty attitude you knew back in middle school, instead, he was replaced by one hell of a man.
One with skinny far from the words to use to describe him.
You had to admit, it looked good on him.
"No way! Really?" You exclaimed, maybe a bit too loudly, drawing the gazes of people sitting nearby. The person Adam had nearly bumped into now glared at you. Embarrassed, you lowered your tone and leaned in. A wide smile graced your features, and Adam seemed a bit taken aback by how close you leaned in.
As quickly as it happened, it was replaced by a devilish grin of his own.
"I know, I know. Crazy fuckin hot now I know."
You couldn't help but roll your eyes. His cocky personality was intriguing and if not a bit endearing despite how you'd probably not be able to stand any other guy who acted like this. It was just so... Adam. It suited him.
"I didn't even recognize you! You're so..." Your eyes raked over his features as you struggled for words to say.
"Hot? Cool? So gigantic, you want to climb me like a tree?" He answered for you, making a show of flexing his arms.
"..Tall." You finally settled on. "How tall are you now?"
A smug smirk played on his lips as if he had heard your thoughts but he at least pretended to humor your question.
"I'm six-six, babe." He answered proudly, standing up from his chair to show himself off.
Your eyes widened in disbelief as he towered over you, his giant hands resting on his hips as you got to see just how big he really was.
He looked huge in the chair but now? God, you could've mistaken him for a giant or something.
"WHOA!" You exclaimed, fidgeting with your hands in your lap as you took him in before he sat back down quickly. Everyone was getting annoyed by you two now.
Adam hadn't stopped grinning since he put together who you are and your blatant gaping at his appearance only seemed to spurred him on more.
The chair creaked as he sat back down, undoubtedly old but also the sheer size of Adam probably didn't help.
"Anyway, whatcha doing here at the DMV?" Adam asked, taking his phone out of his pocket briefly and scanning it over before shoving it back in with a scowl.
You straightened up a little, trying to ignore how his face changed when he looked at his phone.
"I just moved back here so I'm getting my address changed on my license. What about you?"
Adam jabbed his thumb in the direction of one of the large windows, where you could see a large black motorcycle gleaming in the sunlight, parked between two expensive-looking cars.
"Gotta get my license for that beauty, I've been driving it around without it but Lute was nagging me about getting it before I got in a wreck or something." He scoffed, "Like that'll ever happen."
Lute! It was good that she and Adam still seemed to be friends. You three had been a bit of a trio in elementary school and into middle school so you did feel a bit guilty for not recognizing him.
Before you could respond, he seemed to finally register the rest of what you said. His eyebrows rose up as he dropped his hand and turned back to you
"You moved back here? No way! Where?"
You got your phone out of your pocket, opening it and going to your notes app to find the name of your apartment complex since you were still having trouble remembering it.
"Uh, the Northern Winds complex?"
Adam thought for a moment, trying to figure out where it was before his eyes lit up in recognition.
"Ohhh I know where that is, over there by the fucking.. what's it called?" He snapped his fingers as he tried to remember, "Railroad?"
You nodded. It wasn't ideal to hear trains going by all through the night but the price was hard to beat, especially in this economy.
"Yep!"
Now calling for numbers, A3, A7, A8, C4, C2, D11, F5
The intercom announced. You both looked at your tickets and while it wasn't you, Adam sucked in a breath.
"D11, that's me." He told you, bending over to gather his things.
You were a bit disappointed your reunion had been cut short, but you were happy he was getting out of here after the comment he made earlier.
One of his papers slipped out of his hands, and you were quick to try to grab it for him.
"Here, let me grab that for you." Bending down to scoop it up you accidentally saw some of the information on it.
Mainly his status.
You expected to see single circled for some reason but when you saw Married circled haphazardly, you froze momentarily.
Adam seemed to notice what you had grabbed and quickly snatched it out of your hand.
"Oh shit. Thanks for picking it up." He told you, stuffing it into a binder on the top of the stack.
You don't know why, but you felt... disappointed.
Maybe it's because you thought he was flirting with you.
"You're married?" You asked abruptly, surprising even yourself. Adam sighed and looked away.
"You saw that, huh?" He huffed, irritated. "Wish I wasn't. That bitch has been cheating on me for months now."
You hesitated at that. On one hand, you were overjoyed he wasn't actually with anyone but on the other, you couldn't help but feel bad for your old friend.
"Oh, Adam, I'm so sorry that's terrible.."
Adam shrugged, adjusting his things in his hands. "Its whatever, I'm just getting more information before I serve her the papers."
Now calling for numbers, A3, A7, A8, C4, C2, D11, F5
The intercom announced again and Adam glared up at the screen.
"Well, see ya around bitch. I'd give you my number but I gotta go before that receptionist lady lights my ass on fire. Run into me again soon, okay?" He told you, giving you a wink before disappearing into two doors for his license.
"Bye Adam!" You called after him, although he was already gone.
You hoped you saw him again.
