He blinked at her, surprised. That alone was disconcerting; Giovanni had heard words similar all throughout his life and had never batted an eye. Rejection didn’t affect him. Water off a ducks back. But that wasn’t what caused the dip in his brow, the flicker of his eyes as he looked her up and down. Even her tone was threaded with a subtle kind of affection, the kind that could take the heat out of even the harshest of words. It was an exchange between friends, that much was clear. What caught him so uncomfortably was that, quite simply, he hadn’t said it first.

As Drew stared, waiting for him to move, to leave, to reply, to anything, Giovanni found himself scrambling for the last time he’d asked her to leave him alone. It felt like the oddest loss, as if he was in a perpetual competition of I need you less that he was usually so good at winning. It didn’t feel like the loss of a throne, though. It felt oddly... good. 

God, he felt dizzy. 

Giovanni sat heavily on the edge of her bed, and could hear her exasperated sigh as she pushed books aside to make room for him. 

“I take it you’re not going to let me study, then?” Drew asked, and he lay back on the space she’d created for him.  

“Study around me.” 

She rolled her eyes, but he watched her closely enough not to miss the small smile tugging at the corner of her lips. He wondered, briefly, what it was he’d be doing right now if he wasn’t with her. What it was he’d been spending his time on before her. What it was that he used to look at before her. 

Her eyes narrowed, glancing over pages, already lost to her world of words. It was no wonder his family liked her; she was smart, like they were. Responsible, like they were. But different, too. Not as cold. She was everything Giovanni wasn’t. 

And now she was the one who asked him to leave, not the other way around. Never the other way around. As her eyes glanced over to meet his own, he found it impossible to question why. He could paint the way she made him feel. 

“Can you stop looking at me, please? I’m uncomfortable.” 

He snorted at her, and she smiled back. “Fuck you, too.”
