Adaptation Goofiness: Sir Lionel (and co.) just randomly dying on a trip to London.
For clarification, in the original French Mort, Sir Lionel was slain in battle by the sons of Mordred in the aftermath of the Final Battle.
For whatever reason, the writer of the Stanzaic Morte Arthure decided to cut out Mordred's sons and, as a result, Lionel dies for no explicit reason other than "he got jumped in London". Which then gets incorporated into Le Morte by Malory.
