Do you like the Nickelodeon Tmnt?
I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, the animation is great. The dynamic between Hamato Yoshi and Oroku Saki and their history is very well written, and I do love the voice acting, and the message that family ties are never about the blood shared, but the bonds formed.
However;
There is so much lack of writing, when it comes to the female characters, that it borders onto sexism. The only female character that has good writing and good character development WAS Karai, until they decided to mutate her, and practically written her off for most of season 3. She had a lot of subtle mannerisms and expressions that, if you pay close attention to, give off what she was truly feeling, or planning. Like when she tricked Leo to believe she truly thinks Splinter is her father, so he would take her to the lair. The first time she saw Splinter, she awknowledged him as Splinter, not as Father. She only calls him Father, once she truly did believe that is who he is to her. I really wish we could have more writing like that, for the other female characters in the show.
But, sadly, Karai is the only good female character in this show. Any other female character in this are only briefly mentioned, show up in a couple of episodes, or get written/killed off in some bullshit way.
And, don’t even get me started on April Oneil in this show.
She is only written to be good for three things;
Fueling ship wars,
Booty shots,
and a deus ex machina to get out of tough situations.
Outside of these three traits, there is nothing memorable about this character, outside how insanely frustrating and inconsistent she is.
The one other female character that could of shed some good light on the female characters in this show, was Irma. She seemed like a normal character in the show, a rarity in a series where everyone is either a mutant, or have fighting training or have some kind of power. She looked like she can be relatable, since I’m sure we’ve had at least one instance where we felt like the third wheel in a group friendship, and she was not afraid to call her friends out on their bullshit.
But, instead of having a third female supporting character, what do the writers do?
Have her turn out to be a Kraang spy.
Ugh.
Time and time again, it seems like the only thing the writers care about, when it comes to their female characters, is whether or not they can be a romantic interest for someone. If they are not, there seems to be no care or importance placed on them. Even April, who is written to be this super powerful Mary Sue, is mostly used as something for Donnie to obsess over, and fight Casey over.
I know this show is aimed for kids, and more specifically, aimed for boys. Because of this, maybe the writers think there should be more focus on the male characters, which would explain their lack of interest in developing good female characters.
But, what kind of message is that to teach kids? It shouldn’t matter what’s the gender you are catering for, a good character should not be given less treatment or less writing because it is female. Why can’t we have a show full of great characters, both male and female?
At the rate that this show is going, I’m not sure how much longer I can put up with the writing on it’s female characters. We’ll see how they handle Renet, but lets face it; with their track record, we will only be stuck with a more annoying, and vastly less interesting April for Mikey to fawn over instead of Donnie.
adayinmymeadow replied to your post “watching football (soccer for you North Americans XD) with my mom is...”
Funny story time: I'm American, but I call soccer, football. My father is Hispanic and he calls it that or "futbol" so I grew up thinking of the sport as football not soccer.
yesss join the rest of the world in this! XD (every time I see/ hear soccer, I'll always remember John Cleese's awesome Soccer vs Football rants LOL)
