Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan
Narrators:
Ari Fliakos Robin Sloan
Summary:
The Great Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon away from life as a San Francisco web-design drone and into the aisles of Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, but after a few days on the job, Clay discovers that the store is more curious than either its name or its gnomic owner might suggest. The customers are few, and they never seem to buy anything; instead, they "check out" large, obscure volumes from strange corners of the store. Suspicious, Clay engineers an analysis of the clientele's behavior, seeking help from his variously talented friends, but when they bring their findings to Mr. Penumbra, they discover the bookstore's secrets extend far beyond its walls.
My Thoughts:
This audiobook was a pleasant surprise. I say surprise because I usually don’t pick up audiobooks narrated by men mostly due to the fact that I can never get past the voices they do for women. It makes me laugh, so I don’t take the book seriously. But with this book it was really easy to ignore that fact just because of how great everything else was.
Two pleasant surprises with this audiobook: the first is that there are bonus content within that Sloan wrote specifically for listeners, which if you’re reading along with a physical copy can throw you off really easily, but it’s fun because more content!; the second is that Robin Sloan is part of this audiobook (there’s an audiobook within this audiobook that Sloan himself narrates) and it’s done really well! The audiobook within an audiobook sounds removed, which is a really nice touch considering it was supposedly recorded on cassette tapes.
Two things I’m being nitpicky about: I noticed an inconsistency with the accents and by this I mean, since it’s only one person narrating pretty much the whole book (aside from Sloan’s part), only one person does every single voice for all the characters. So when conversations happen, sometimes the narrator accidentally uses the wrong voice for a character. If you’re only listening, this can get confusing especially since not all conversations have dialogue tags.
The only other issue I had is not entirely related to the audiobook and has more to do with the writing itself but necessary to know if you want to listen. There’s a lot of info dump going on, and if you’re like me, it’s easy to get lost in confusion. Especially in conversations, I struggled keeping up with the pace, even though I listened to this one slower than my usual (at 1.5x speed).
Overall, it was a quick and easy listen, and I really enjoyed the story/experience. If you’ve been meaning to read this book, I do recommend this audiobook!
Thanks for reading :-)
