Adderstrike

Name: Adderstrike. Gender: Tom. Appearance: Narrow and angular tom who has the very common coat color of brown-gray. His head is slightly wedge shaped. Adderstrike inherited much of his longbodiedness from his mother, Longsnake. From his father, however, he received dark mackerel tabby stripes. These markings are very prominent on his face because they are sharp, geometric, and a high contrast to his dull coat color. His pawpads are a dull pinkish terracotta, as are his inner ears and nose.

The only problems I see here are that his coat color might be better described as taupe or caramel tabby, and with that the pawpads and nose would be a different color as well. Check the Cat colors link in the useful links section for a better explanation. Adderstrike's eyes are green-yellow and are much too sensitive to light (a condition called ocular photophobia). As a result of this condition, the pupils of his eyes are always thin slits and he squints against even faint light. By squinting, the warrior's face is scrunched and it appears to always be drawn up in a scowl or grimace. The bunched up face also gives Adderstrike an adenoidal tone of voice, much unlike the deep voice a warrior should have.

Rank/Alignment: Warrior. Age: 14 moons. History: Adderstrike was born to an unknown loner and Longsnake, a queen who tends to have many birth complications. His siblings died off one by one over a matter of days. After surviving long enough, Adderkit received his name. Longsnake named him after her name suffix. And fit him it did.

Full of yourself much Longsnake? Bare in mind that it isn't common for a cat to name her offspring after herself in warrior land. Usually the prefix has to do with the cat's looks, and seeing as he's long-ish and a brown color, that color being common for a lot of poisonous snakes ,I figured Adder- had to do with him looking like a snake and not his mother being prideful. If this isn't a known fact about him then it would have just been considered a strange happenstance to the other cats. If this fact about him is known, however, his mother would be labeled vain or something of the like.

The kit was thrown under the spoils of his mother for his being an only kit (and his found sight issues: oversensitive eyes). He never played fair and liked to tease the other kits because he chose to ignore his own faults. The reason for his own fault ignorance was his embarrassment of them and his mother constantly disregarding them.

Sounds like that one deaf kit all over again, except he didn't get eaten by a hawk. The tom was nervous going into apprenticeship. It was then he realized how bad his ocular photophobia was. Everyday was a struggle to him since he had to squint against even the faintest light. This condition hampered his hunting, fighting, and patrolling abilities. On any day the apprentice preferred perching outside of the den and mocking his clanmates as they walked past, another method to ignore his problems.

PFFF I love this cat.

He also found an ability, a sensitivity to heat, as more of a gift than a curse. Like an actual snake he could feel as a living thing neared him. Adderpaw discovered he could use it to hunt, but his lack of normal vision trumped it. His mentor never wanted to teach him because of his sight and his nasty personality. He doubted his becoming a warrior, but he managed it anyway by hunting very hard overnight when the light was not very harsh on his vision.

Eeeeeek cats with powers. If you're writing a fanstory about him this should be okay, seeing as quite a few main characters in warrior have powers or supernatural assistance of some kind, but if he's just a roleplay character or a minor character I would leave out this bit and perhaps just have him rely more on scent and sound at night to hunt then snakey-heat vision.

Another thing, the suffix -Strike would make it seem like he a) Is a good hunter/fighter or b) Strikes swift and deadly like an adder. This paragraph begs to differ. Might I suggest a more average warrior name like Adderpelt or Adderfur?

During apprenticeship, Adderpaw developed a crush on Snowpaw; he was more in love with her looks than who she really was. Ever since the two were kits they would butt heads and argue. The she cat was an easy target for him and provided the most reaction when teased, something Adderpaw prided himself on. Snowpaw never believed in his confession as a warrior when he blurted out his love. She thought he was just crushing on her looks, which is true. Their love is so far unrequited.

That's what you get for being a jerk Adderstrike. Personality: Nasty, insulting, and rude. His comebacks are snarkier than most. Adderstrike longs to make his clanmates suffer, often leaving them on their own and not helping them because it amuses him. Watching others react to his jeers is his favorite form of entertainment. The warrior will dare a clanmate to do something stupid just to watch them struggle under consequence. Adderstrike mocks them if they do comply, and if they do not. Most of this sneering is insecurity, a worry that he'll be next to be narrowed out and given a taste of his own cruelty..

A cat who tortures their clanmates or refuses to help them in need would probably be booted out. They all need to help each other to survive. Maybe he's lazy when helping and doesn't pull his own weight instead of just abandoning them? Or maybe he does it reluctantly with a lot of complaining? He has a sort of obsession with trees for the shade they provide, and knows which species provide the greatest amount of darkness. Not many cats believe him when he tells them he likes trees and shrug it off as one of his cruel jabs trying to get a reaction.

I love this cat. If Adderstrike has any shreds of kindness within his soul, he directs it all to his mother. He realizes her emotional hurt from the multitude of lost kits and tries his best to make her proud and keep her happy. The main way he does this is to hunt and bring her food for her next litter.

Not even Adderstrike can hate his mommy.

All in all, he's a pretty great cat. So far he's my favorite submission.

I would try to simplify the appearance by finding a color like taupe or caramel that both fits the description of grey-brown and also is accurate to his coat. So purrhaps he would be a taupe/caramel/whatever mackerel tabby?

To go with that, I would tweak his name if he truly isn't a great hunter. Also perhaps re-word his personality, only a certain level of jerk is allowed in warriors society and he's pretty borderline with the "abandons others" thing.
