Hi, Elan! Welcome to the studyblr community. ☺️ I'd like to apply for a scholarship that would give me a chance to study in a public boarding school, but I'm still hesitating. Could you tell me how it's like to study in a boarding school? Is it a good idea?
I started going to boarding school because my parents move around a lot and my education was all over the place, and it was the best decision we ever made. I think it really boosts your productivity because if you need help or to study with a friend or you’ve just forgotten your homework, your friends are all already there. It’s also kind of like a ready made friendship group? You obviously have people you get on with more than others but even if you don’t like someone you can still get along with them and they’ll still have your back because you live together and it’s kind of hard not to. You can also get plenty of advice about subjects and teachers from the years above because yet again, you live with them, sometimes they are a great help when you don’t understand something because they’ve already done it.
My school is in a smallish town, so its quite a sheltered way of living, but at the same time, because it’s a boarding school, you make friends with people from all over the world. When i was 13/14 i got to visit Hong Kong because i was visiting one of my friends! It really helps set you up for university as well, because you’ll be living in dorms/ with other people there too, and it helps you to learn how to live with people.
My advice would be to go on a taster day, because when i was looking at schools there were some that i knew wouldn’t be right for me because i really wouldn’t get along with the type of people who went there. As well as that, some people just don’t do well away from home, I had a few friends who left to go to comprehensives closer to home and are doing better there. It took me about a week to settle in, but about a year to truly feel like it was the right decision.
I think it really depends on your reasons for going, and whether it is a good fit for you, one of the reasons i like it is because it pushes me to do my best, in my school you kind of get peer pressured into doing your best? like its not seen as cool to slack off, but at the same time it puts quite a high pressure on you to do well and its quite competitive, some people really like that, but others don’t do so well in those conditions.
