ETHIOPIA - How better to engage the community not only in HIV/AIDS response but also in monitoring.

The Minister of Health proposed commemorating WAD 2023 in Addis-Ababa city on 1 December at the UN Compound. The planned WAD events will include among others an official commemoration in place to be communicated with official addressing, a panel discussion on selected topics by inviting technical experts through TV including the use of sign language, use of other media outlets including social media and the production and dissemination of messages on HIV prevention using banners and posters. From 28 to 29 November there will be a community-led monitoring national workshop. This workshop will bring together 80 people from all Ethiopian regions and will discuss how better to engage the community not only in HIV/AIDS response but also in monitoring. This will include a discussion on the digitalization of CLM.

Le Lion de Juda

Maurice Calka a été formé dans le culte de la sculpture classique. « Sa génération considérait qu’à coté des Grecs, tout le monde pouvait aller se rhabiller, sauf peut-être Rodin. Et puis mon père a fini par se lâcher. Il a découvert l’art africain. Les arts premiers le fascinaient. » En 1954, le sculpteur réalise son oeuvre le plus emblématique : le lion de Juda à Addis Abeba, capitale de l’Ethiopie. « A l’époque, les Ethiopiens n’ont pas les compétences sur place pour bâtir leur théâtre national. Il demandent à des Français de le faire. C’est donc un prix de Rome, Henri Chomette, qui le construit. Et quand on s’adresse à un prix de Rome, c’est pour obtenir une construction très calme, très classique, posée devant une place entourée d’autres bâtiments. L’empereur Haïlé Sélassié 1er demande alors que, sur cette place, l’on  installe un Lion de Juda qui le représente. Ce lion, c’est aussi celui des rastas. Mon père commence à dessiner un lion moderne. Et là, ça commence à beaucoup tousser dans l’entourage d'Haïlé Sélassié. Les bruits de couloir circulent, le ministre de la Culture s’inquiète, il voudrait un lion traditionnel, comme celui de la place Denfert. Mon père a rencontré deux fois le Négus, la seconde à l’inauguration, et la première au cours d’un entretien où il lui a montré la maquette. Haïlé Sélassié tourne autour, regarde mon père droit dans les yeux et lui demande : “Est-ce que c’est moderne ?” Mon père répond oui. L’Empereur réplique : “C’est bien, c’est ce que je veux.” Et il s’en va. »

Not sure your friends will enjoy the cow-hide made "tradional seats" from Bahir Dar? Wondering if these old-school thick pieces of white material called gabis would fit in your urban apartment? We have an idea for you if you want to bring back a lovely decorative memory of your trip to Ethiopia.

The Kechene Women Potters formed their association more than 20 years, naming it after their neighbourhood. Kechenem located in the North of the city of Addis-Ababa, is indeed known for its ancestral Jewish community. The association, supported by ILO and UNDP, has made a name for themselves in the artisan bazaars of the city as producers, among many other pretty clay pots, of paint dotted ceramic hens. One of the founding members, Negatwa Lasab, is even among the "Ethiopian women unleashed" selected as the most inspiring role models in a book for young Ethiopian girls, Temsalet1.

The little hens may actually remind you of the crafts found in Uzès in the South of France - others say this is typical Ethiopian art, inspired by the Guinea fowls which can be found in the countryside. As often, the truth might lie somewhere in the middle. The only thing that nobody can't deny is that there was at some point a Frenchman involved in the development of this association.

Now, you certainly want to visit the shop - which, we can tell, is sort of a challenge if you don't know the exact location! So we have pin-pointed it for you on our "Our Addis" map 2. Opening hours seem a bit random but you can just give a call upon going - 0913 64 72 98 or 0913 14 35 01. You shouldn't find a closed door on Saturday morning for instance, but you might have to wait for a few minutes for the seller to run from her house to the shop.
