I awoke from a light sleep as the warmth of the rising sun coming through the eastern window crept across the bed. With my eyes still shut, I opened my mouth and tasted the air, relishing the blend of aromas that permeated the bookshop’s upstairs flat. Old books. Aziraphale’s cologne. Scotch from the empty glasses on the bedside tables. The jasmines and orchids I brought when I moved in.
Across the street, Nina’s coffee shop was doing brisk business, and the scent of freshly-brewed coffee and baked goods seeped under the windowsill. I reveled in the warmth of the thick tartan quilt and snuggled deeper. You could take the demon out of the snake, but you couldn’t take the snake out of the demon.
I turned my serpent eyes to the ceiling, staring at nothing, and let the stillness settle over me, a sense of peace I haven’t felt since…well, since I created Alpha Centauri, perhaps.
