“y/n.”
You abruptly look up as you see Thomas standing behind you, and he lets out a sigh as you pointedly look away. He walks around you, stopping in front of you as he forces you to look at him, and he insists, “Talk to me, please.”
You remain silent, busying yourself as you try to fix up your hammock. Ever since Thomas’ return from being trapped in the maze with Minho and Alby you’ve been avoiding him. You spent that night restless, afraid to wake up the next morning and find Thomas’ lifeless body behind the walls. It terrified you to think you were about to lose the one person you cared about, the one person who made life feel just a little better, and you hated how there was nothing you could do.
You could barely function when the walls opened back up, and Thomas and Minho rounded the corner, carrying a barely conscious Alby as the three triumphantly returned. You wanted to throw your arms around him, kiss him, tell him you loved him over and over again, but you felt overcome with anger instead.
“I don’t want you to be angry at me.” Thomas tells you now, reaching out to touch you arm, attempting to get your attention, and something inside you snaps.
“I have every right to be angry.” you snarl, turning to glare at Thomas, who gulps as he retracts his hand away from your arm. You lower your voice, trembling ever so slightly as you continue, “You left me, Thomas. When you ran into the Maze, I... I didn’t think you’d come back.”
“But I did come back.” Thomas takes a step towards you, and you scoff. “I know I scared you, but I had to help Minho and Alby.”
You let out a heavy sigh, shoulders slumping. “I know.”
“Hey,” Thomas gently says, running his hands up your arms and resting them on your shoulders. He tilts his head, and you look up to meet his gaze. He offers you a small smile as he continues, “I didn’t mean to hurt you, okay? I’m sorry.”
You press your lips together, hating how your anger is fading as Thomas holds you in his arms. His hands fall away from your shoulders to wrap around your waist, and he pulls you towards his chest. After a pause, you say, “Promise me you won’t do something stupid like that again.”
Thomas hesitates, a faint grin appearing on his face, and you know it’s foolish of you to make Thomas promise something that’s almost impossible. But seeing Thomas smile makes you smile ever so slightly, and you nudge him, “I’m serious.”
“Okay, okay,” Thomas laughs, nodding. “I promise.”
“Good.” you smile as Thomas leans forward to press a kiss on your forehead. “I don’t want to lose you.”
“You won’t.” Thomas tells you, and with the determination in his tone, with his dark eyes peering into yours, you know you can believe him.
