Adapted for personal preferences (I hate vertical chains and usually swap back in the stitch the chain is meant to be a substitute for) and to make the pattern easier to read for my ADHD brain.
Instructions:
Make a magic circle: six chains, slip stitch to close ring.
(Holding slip stitch, loop tail of yarn following the ring of chains. Add to grip where holding slip stitch. Proceed as if chain + tail is all one piece.)
Round 1: make all doubles into center of magic ring (holding tail looped with chain ring)
3 double into ring, chain 1
3 double in ring, chain 1
3 double in ring, chain 1
3 double in ring, chain 1
Slip stitch to top of 1st double to close
Round 2:
Turn over
Slip stitch into same space
In same chain 1 space: 3 double, chain 1, 3 double
Chain 1
Next chain 1 space: 3 double, chain 1, 3 double
Chain 1
Next chain 1 space: 3 double, chain 1, 3 double
Chain 1
Next chain 1 space: 3 double, chain 1, 3 double
Chain 1
Slip stitch to top of beginning 1st double to close
Round 3:
Turn over
Slip stitch into space between the groups of 3 doubles (not corner chain 1 space)
3 double into same space (NOT CORNER)
Chain 1
Next chain 1 corner space: 3 double, chain 1, 3 double
Chain 1
Space after group of 3 doubles: 3 doubles
Chain 1
Next chain 1 corner space: 3 double, chain 1, 3 double
Chain 1
Space after group of 3 doubles: 3 doubles
Chain 1
Next chain 1 corner space: 3 double, chain 1, 3 double
(Repeat as needed)
Slip stitch to top of beginning double to close
Round 4:
Turn over
Slip stitch into space between the groups of 3 doubles (not corner space)
3 double in same space (not corner)
Next chain 1 corner space: 3 double, chain 1, 3 double
Space after group of 3 doubles: 3 doubles
Next chain 1 corner space: 3 double, chain 1, 3 double
Space after group of 3 doubles: 3 doubles
Next chain 1 corner space: 3 double, chain 1, 3 double
(Repeat as needed)
Slip stitch to top of beginning double to close
Repeat round 4 as needed to achieve the size square you want!
