Hello my rival @adhd-sakura!!! How ya been?

I just wanted to let you know that once team 7 came back to Konoha grimy, gross, and exhausted from their latest mission- and all they wanted was some fucking food. They were just gonna get take-out from a local dive and go home, but as soon as they walked in and Sakura asked Kakashi something, the owner of the shop started berating them about something she didn’t understand. Suddenly Naruto started yelling back at the man and it blew up into a full-on argument. Sakura was desperately trying to ask the others what was going on, and eventually Kakashi just sighed and signed, “The owner is saying he can’t serve you because he doesn’t have any menus in braille, and that we can’t be expecting him to accommodate ‘people like you.’” 

Of course Sakura was fucking fuming and wanted to pop off, but Sasuke interjected.

“Now Naruto’s cussing him out for being ‘discriminatory’ and says that he could sue the guy for not being accessible. No, no, don’t stop him; I legit wanna see how long this can last.”

It lasted a long fucking time. Long enough for them all to get kicked out and decide to make the trek to Ichiraku’s a few blocks over, where Sakura thoroughly explained to a well-intentioned Naruto that she could read just fine and that that’s how they’d communicate back in the academy, like, how the hell could he forget that they used to pass written notes every single day for more than five years?!

(In case anyone thinks this is too far-fetched, let me inform you that this has actually happened to Oscar-winning Deaf actress Marlee Matlin on multiple occasions; like, this is an actual thing, you guys).

*ADHD-Sakura* Sakura doesn't get diagnosed until she meets tsunade because she has 'female' adhd symptoms that no one recognizes! When Tsunade tells her she has it, she basically points at Naruto (also ADHD) and goes 'But I'm not like that????'

Oh rival, ya gotta play it like that? by exploiting my love for tsunade?

Anyway Sakura was born hearing; it was on the night of the nine tailed fox’s attack that she went deaf. In the midst of all the commotion she got separated from her family and was left way too close to a field of explosive tags meant for Kyuubi, and accidentally triggered one. Everyone just assumed a squirrel or something set it off and wanted to keep moving, but Inoichi knew something was wrong. He acted on his gut feeling was the one who rescued her with the rest of InoShikaCho at his side. Imagine his surprise six years later when his daughter dragged home from Sakura as her first real “bestest friend.” they end up lowkey adopting her after they realize how much her own family isolates her but that is neither here nor there

The blast had obliterated Sakura’s inner ear, and about a half year later she was diagnosed with profound sensorineural hearing loss. There are very few sounds that she can actually detect and speech is basically meaningless to her. She can lipread like a champ though and has an amazing ability to sense/track people’s chakra.

*adjd sakura* inner is just a manifestation of Sakuras repressed Oppisiontal Defience Disorder and other strong emotions that were discouraged because as someone with ADHD she felt things more acutely and intensely then many people!

...YES. and honestly we are in dire need of a damn explanation for inner like cMON kishimoto

Sakura’s parents never learned how to sign, and they certainly weren’t the ones to teach her. When she was diagnosed they were so, so, so obsessed with “curing” her that they didn’t leave much time for actually enjoying and appreciating their daughter. The Harunos spent years traveling off and on, following any rumor of some sort of ‘miracle worker’ doctor they’d heard. It wasn’t until Tsunade set them straight that they stopped hunting (“Her hearing loss is permanent and I can’t fucking regrow stereocilia! Just let her sign and go to preschool or something and get over yourselves!”). 

Whenever they returned to Konoha they tried to enroll her into speech lessons which she never really ‘got,’ and constantly felt like she was letting others down. As a damn three-year-old. It was all incredibly traumatizing for her, and even now she’s super defensive about anyone touching her ears (Tsunade's the only one she lets work with her during her annual physicals, and even then she’s clearly nervous).

She learned signing in preschool, and mastered lipreading enough for the academy to enroll her. She’s never really felt connected with her family, but she’s built a new family with anyone who was willing to sign with her like Team 7 and the Yamanakas.
