Since October is ADHD Awareness Month, and because I have experience being a mother of a child with ADHD, I thought this information was worth sharing. There are several measures that can be taken to further support a child or spouse with ADHD....
Increase protein
Decrease sugar
Avoid fake foods with additives
Steer clear of food colorings, especially Red Dye 40
Supplement Vitamin D3, Fish oil & Zinc
Protein-rich foods are used by the brain to make neurotransmitters, which are the chemicals released by brain cells to communicate with each other. This is especially important in the mornings, so be sure to include protein in their breakfast! Protein will also help to avoid high sugar spikes by preventing surges in blood sugar. As we know, sugar increases hyperactivity.
Red dye 40, and other food dyes, are also linked to ADHD symptoms such as hyperactivity. Like sugar, it is best to avoid it all together. Look for it on food labels.
Supplements like Vitamin D3, Fish oil and Zinc, can help keep ADHD symptoms in check, while Vitamin D3 may also increase dopamine (a feel good hormone). Be sure to get the appropriate strength for your child's age/weight.
