I know you're not an expert or anything, but do you have any insight towards good anthropology grad programs in California?

Depends on the exact field of study. I'm not going to include arch because I honestly don't know enough to feel confident.

Here are some that I felt was pretty decent when I was looking (they have more fields than listed):

Stanford; primate, bioanth, cultural anth, maybe med anth?

UC Berkeley; med anth, bioanth, folklore, 

UCLA; med anth (mental illness), cultural anth (more for mental illnesses), bioanth

UCSD; sociolinguistics, cultural anth

UCSB; cultural anth

UC Irvine; i don't even know how to label this?? interdisciplinary

UCSF; med anth

USF; policy and public affairs aka applied
